I went to the interview with Rey, my fiance. We arrived by the time the doors opened at 7:20. We had to leave a backpack we brought with security, so fyi it's better to bring maybe two large purses if you need to bring things. We took a number and waited til they handed out the order of docs right at 8. Then they checked our paperwork and needed Rey to make 2 copies of his police reports at the copy shop around the corner. He came back and we handed them in, no problem, to the nice Brazilian woman in room #1. The actual interview began around quarter to 10 and we were the fifth people interviewed. Before us went two couples, both approved, and two K3 girls who were alone, who both got the red slip (denied or just 221(g) I don't know).
Our interview was about ten minutes long. First Rey signed the documents and did his fingerprints. Then the guy, who looked resentful of being dragged out of bed to be there, started asking questions. I did a lot of the talking because Rey was nervous. He asked us first how we met and so we just both talked and kind of rambled, waiting for him to stop us. He asked us when we got engaged, and we said we kind of got serious about marrying somewhere down the line in Dec 2005.
He asked me what my profession was and what the cosponsor's was and that was it for the I-34 talk. He asked Rey about his health twice, probably because he wasn't paying attention to what he was doing. He did not smile once, let me add. Then he asked some other questions (have you planned the wedding, where will you live, etc.) and then hit us with his question about the J1 visa Rey got denied in May 06. He said that if we said we got engaged in December, Rey should have said he had a fiance on his application. I said that they asked him about relatives, but not friends. I started to panic, and then the guy said that the form had "fiance" on it as one of the possible family members. So Rey said we were not officially engaged until after that denial (TG!). I think it also helped that when I talked about how we met and filing for the J1 visa I said we knew that he would have to return to Brazil for two years afterward so we planned to get married in Brazil in a few years until the J1 was denied...
The CO did not look convinced and he paused for a long time. Then he went on with some other dumb questions and then started stamping the green sheet and saying when the visa would be available.
After that we were very relieved. The CO appeared to loathe us the whole time, and neither one of us thought we'd get the visa, but in the end I suppose it all worked out just fine. 3 days later it arrived at Rey's house in SP.
I give it a 3 because the process didn't take too long but knock off two points for the rudeness of the CO who treated us like criminals.
