I am the applicant (UK citizen, CR-1), I live in Japan with my husband.
Our interview was for 8.30, but we arrived at the embassy at 7.30, we were second in the queue, but by 8 am there were at least 20 people behind us. We were done by 9.30, so I think getting there early is a good idea.
First the embassy staff will give you a clear file where you put any additional documents in order. For us this was just photos, passport, tax returns for the new tax year, letter pack 500 (you DO still need this!) and medical. They weren't interested in seeing any additional documents.
After that they returned my X-ray, birth certificate and marriage certificate, and then we waited again. After some time I was called up for fingerprints.
Then came the interview: it was very relaxed and the consular officer was very nice, he asked how we met, when we got married and if I'd met my husband's family. It was like a conversation though not like a formal interview. It was painless. Halfway through my husband came up and we talked together.
We were done in just over an hour, but I think getting there early helps a lot.
