We had a good experience at the consulate. You wait outside on the sidewalk until they call your appointment time, about 30 minutes before your appointment. Our appointment was at 10:00 and we got there at 9:00 just to have time to see how things worked. We had no problems passing through security- we only brought our papers in manila envelopes- we didn't bring bags or cell phones. Make sure to say that you are there for a visa de residencia, the only other choice is tourismo, and we gave them the print out of our appointment confirmation. We handed all our paperwork to the first woman who called us up. She asked my fiance questions while I stood with him but she didn't ask me anything directly. We had to leave to retake his photos because they weren't of his head only- it wasn't a big deal but just be very careful with the specifications they ask for. When we got back with the pictures he had his fingerprints done. Then we were called up to a second woman who asked more questions- again she didn't ask me anything directly. And then she said we were approved!!! We were out by 10:40.
This is what we turned in:
-DS-156 and DS-156K forms
-passport
-2 photos
-original birth certificate
-police record
-envelope from the medical exam
-affidavit of support (I-134 form, letter from my employer, 3 pay stubs, letter from my bank, checking and savings account statements)
-proof of relationship (letters showing intent to marry, 16 photos of us, skype call records, flight itineraries and passport stamps from trips to visit him, copy of visas from my time living in Ecuador, venue license agreement for our wedding, save the date, receipt for wedding dress)
At the end they gave us back our proof of relationship both from the interview and from what I sent in with the petition. They kept everything else.
