My appointment was at 9.15am and I arrived at the Consulate 15 mins earlier. There were no lines at the main gate at all, so it took less than 5 mins to go through the security check and get into the main consulate hall. My husband (USC) on showing his passport was allowed in with me.

Once in the building, I was handed instructions with interview steps. My husband and I were surprised to see only a handful of people inside. The Consulate wasn’t busy and only three windows were open.

I first went to window 22 to submit my passport, pay a fee and have my fingerprints taken. My case file wasn’t there, so the caseworker had to look for it elsewhere. He excused us and left his post for 10 mins to search for it. Once it was found, he explained my case was filed under my maiden name.

Once done at that window, 10 mins later my number was called up to another window, where I had a brief conversation with a caseworker. He went through my file to ensure all documents were in order, updated, signed and ready for the actual interview.

There were approx. 10 people ahead of me scheduled for the interview, so it took over 1.5 hours before my number was called up again. I was the last to be interviewed on that day. Questions the CO asked my husband and I:

1.What do you do here in Germany? (addressed to husband)
2.What specifically do you do for the government? (addressed to husband)
3.How did you meet? (addressed to me)
4.When did you get married? (addressed to me)
5.You are being sent back to the US now? Where will you be? (addressed to husband)
6.So, you are not associated with the Army then? (addressed to my husband after he told the CO the facility he will be working at)
7.Have you seen this brochure (about domestic violence)? (addressed to me)

Then we were instructed about removal of condition after two years and were told the visa was approved. The interview took 10 mins and the CO did not request to see any additional documents. Due to our situation we also could pick up the passport and the Immigrant Visa Packet in person the next morning, which worked great for us!! Normally no pick-up is available.
Overall, it was a very good experience and it all went very smooth!!
