BEFORE THE INTERVIEW (I am the beneficiary):
- Once my fiance got the case number from the NVC, I emailed the Consulate to see if my documents were there.
- They answered they had received them and emailed Packet 3 to my fiance. My fiance didn't get it.
- I emailed the Consulate again to let them know we hadn't received Packet 3.
- It turned out the reason why my fiance hadn't got anything was that there was a typo in the email address they used. They emailed Packet 3 to me, this time I got it.
- I followed the instructions in Packet 3. Faxed in the DS-230 Part 1 and Applicant Statement.
- They sent me a notice of receipt via email, with the instructions on how to fix an appointment (I assume this email was Packet 4).
- I fixed my appointment by calling the Visa Information Service, as instructed.
- Brought everything they require to the interview (including the original DS-230 Part 1 and Applicant Statement).
NOW SOME HINTS FOR THE INTERVIEW:
Make sure you have all the documents exactly as requested - good enough is not good enough, they want them perfect, so follow the instructions carefully. I saw quite a lot of people being asked to fix problems with their certificates and affidavits of support. They'll have to reschedule an appointment and go back to the Consulate once they've done that.
You'll need 3 identical passport photographs, the right format is 5x5 cm. Have one for the medical, one for fingerprinting (they'll give this one back to you), and two for the interview.
At the Istituto Varelli you'll need your passport for identification.
Two police certificates are required for Italy, make sure you have both: Certificato Generale del Casellario Giudiziale AND Certificato dei Carichi Pendenti.
When they ask for your 'residence' in forms, they want to know where you actually live (= your 'domicilio', in Italian). I was confused at first, and emailed the Consulate for clarification before filling out DS230. I ended up declaring both my 'domicilio' and my 'residenza' (=legal residence) on the forms.
Great budget-friendly place to stay in the area: B&B Franca http://www.bbfranca.it/
10 mins walk from the Consulate, nice and helpful owners, familiar atmosphere.
Getting in touch with the Consulate with concise and clear emails was much more useful than phoning the Visa Information Service before the interview. However, after I got my visa and found out there was a typo in the annotation field, both my fiance and I tried repeatedly to email the Consulate to know what we should do about it, and we got no email back.
