Rating: | Review Topic: K1 Visa
Our interview was scheduled for 7:30am and we arrived early to the embassy around 6:45. At first we were in the really long line, but then my fiancee asked one of the ladies near the entrance which line, and they said line 3 so we went to that line which only had 4 people in it in front of us. It was a much shorter line!!! After waiting around 10 minutes or so, the lady at the entrance asked to see the two copies of the DS156 forms and the passport photos. Then she gave us a green sticker that said K on it and let us in. After passing through a security checkpoint we ended up in another line. The lady at the end of this line, after my fiancee told her she was there for a K-1 visa, gave her a sheet of paper that listed all the documents she needed to have in order and told us to wait by window 5. We had all of our documents ready and in order so we just waited to be called to the window. Maybe 10 minutes later we were told to just go to window 4.
Inside this part of the embassy is still outside, kind of like a courtyard that has a couple places they were selling things to eat. The windows, where you go to talk with the officials that work there, are completely solid except for a small space to slide documents under and there is a telephone you have to pick up to talk to the officials on the other side.
When we arrived to window 4, my fiancee picked up the phone and after greeting each other the lady asked (everything was in Spanish): Who is the petitioner? My fiancee pointed to me and she said "Him", then the lady smiled and she said Who is he? and my fiancee responded "my boyfriend". Then she asked for the documents and had my fiancee open her medical exams and give those to her. We didn't have the photos attached to the DS156 forms, so she asked for those photos, plus 2 more and she stapled the photos to the forms. While looking at the documents, she asked information about her cell number and her email. Then she had my fiancee put my name in the bottom part of DS156K (The part where it has the statement of intent to marry). Then she handed back the extra documents and told us to wait in front for her name to be called.
The extra documents she handed back were: certified copy of my divorce decree, and my cosponsor information for affidavit of support. I think why they didn't need the divorce decree was because they already had it in the original petition. And I was surprised when they gave back the cosponser information because although my current income is good enough, my past income isn't. But evidently we didn't need the cosponsor.
After waiting around a half hour (seemed like forever) they finally called her name to window 3. There she picked up the phone again and greeted the nice man on the other side. In front of him was all of our documentation, including the petition I sent in July. He first asked, who petitioned for you? And my fiancee responded clearly this time "my boyfriend", and how did you meet? and she told him about how we met. And by this time she was fumbling around with the bag that had all our documents in it, and she turned to me and said, "honey can you take this bag for me?" (in spanish mind you because she doesn't speak english) and the consulate heard her, smiled and asked her, is this your boyfriend? And my fiancee said yes. Then after reading the story of how we met, that I included as a supplement to the question on the I-129f petition, he asked her to briefly describe our trip to Santa Marta and the places we visited. Then he asked her if she had any kids, to which she replied no. I was really nervous at this point because I didn't hear the question, all I heard was the negative answer and I though something was bad. Then he asked what I did for a living, how many times I visited, and then asked how we decided to get married. And then he asked when she planned to travel to the US. Later he showed her the DS156K form and asked her to swear that everything indicated was the truth, and had her sign at the bottom. Then he explained the process for the digital fingerprints, to which she did as he instructed her. Then he started typing some stuff in the computer, and my fiancee was a little nervous waiting for more questions, but then the consulate told her "Don't worry, your visa has been approved. Welcome to the United States."
He told her to wait a minute, and then he left for a short while. At this time is when my fiancee almost whispered to me "He said don't worry...our visa has been approved!!" We both smiled so big and just hugged each other. The consulate came back with instructions on how to pick up her passport at the DHL office. After thanking the consulate, we finally left.
When we came for the interview, we brought a LOT of proof of relationship and many pictures. They didn't ask for any of it. We also brought the form DS230, which they also didn't ask for. All in all, the experience was great and it made us soo happy because now we will finally be together.
