The interview at the US Consulate in Johannesburg was fairly painless. My wife's interview was at 1 pm. After getting past the security checkpoint, she waited for her name to be called and was asked to submit 2 passport size photos (even though they were originally submitted to the NVC), my latest tax return (this was submitted to the NVC, I guess the lady at the Consulate was just going through a checklist!) and proofs of our relationship. My wife submitted photos, snapshots with comments from facebook, passport stamps showing our travels together and select mails that I had sent her. She was asked the following questions by the South African lady at the first window and then again by the interviewing officer:
a) How did we meet?
b) Is it the first marriage for both of us?
c) How often did we visit each other before and since our marriage?
d) What does the petitioner do in the US?
and
e) When does my wife plan to leave for the US?

I arrived at 12H30 and found myself the only person there at that time. At 13H00 they allowed us into the security area one at a time where they took my medical reports and cellphone, scanned my bag with my files and other documentation. I was directed to the entrance and sat and waited.
After about 30 minutes and my name was called on the speaker to window 2. There i spoke to a very pleasant lady whom guided me through all they needed. She then sent me to the cashier to pay the fee and that person too was extremely pleasant. Once my card was processed I was directed to wait near window 7.
After a short wait I was called forward and took the prescribed oath, signed the 230 form, scanned fingerprints and was asked some questions. - Where did you meet, When did you meet, Does she have children, do you have children, when do you plan to leave, have you discussed or arranged the wedding yet. - That was it.
I was then told that I can come... read complete review

I traveled to Johannesburg from Cape Town and landed the day before the interview.
I arrived at the consulate at 12:45 and waited in line, there were not many people ahead of me. I had parked my car at the mall across the street and left my cellphone in the car (they make you turn off your electronic devices and leave them at with the security guards). At 1pm we were told to take out our appointment letters and passports, then we were allowed in one at a time.
After going through a very simple security check, I was told to go through a to the next building.I was asked for my medical records, but mine was couriered to the embassy by the doctor himself. I went through the doors and was told by a second security guard to get a number, and then to sit infront of window 3. After about 20 minutes I was called and I was asked to hand over my unabridged birth certificate, my police certificate and my fiance's financial information. also I had to hand over evidence of the relati... read complete review

My overall experience with the Johannesburg consulate was great. We had received packet 3 but we were waiting for my Unabridged birth certificate as it was something that was not brought to our attention until the last minute(you have to have the Unabridged version or they will not give you the visa). After nagging Home affairs for 3 weeks straight we managed to get hold of the Birth certificate on 8 January 2013, exactly 7 days before our flight was scheduled to leave(15 January 2013), we were just about to cancel my flight so it came in the nick of time! With precious little time left to work with, we called the Johannesburg consulate and asked them if there was any way that we could interview 2 days later(10 January 2013) and they said that we could have the appointment on that day at 1:00pm, this was very nice of them as they could have easily just ignored the urgency of our request and let me pay the cancellation fee on my flight. We then rushed to Johannesburg and did our medical... read complete review
