I stood in line for my 7:15 am appointment at 6:15 am, and four families were already in line before me just outside the consulate. Just before 7 am, they started checking people's interview letters and photographs to let us into the building. I advise you take nothing but your documents, otherwise they'll make you either throw it away or take it back to your hotel. They scheduled 35 people for 7:15 am that day (all IV applicants, although I was the only CR1), so I'm thinking that how much time in advance you get there really makes no difference. They called people's names in no noticeable order - although my guess is that we were being called based on our NVC case number. Still, I could have arrived at 7:15 am and I feel like it would've been just fine.

We were able to schedule our appointment as soon as we were able to get our "GYQ" number from the NVC. Lucia paid the $240 bucks at the bank, received the receipt number and we made our appointment on line. We never did receive a letter or package from the consulate. We made our appointment on line, did all the paperwork and showed up.
Another member mentioned problems adding a person to the interview appointment so we did not try that. I wrote to the consulate and was told I only had to show up for the appointment with my fiance and my American passport.
We went together. The people at the gate let Lucia in at 7:30 but for some reason I had to wait until 8 before I could go in. Lucia couldn't carry anything but the visa documents but I was able to process through with "my" purse. We arrived at about 7:55 a.m. for my husband's 8:30 a.m. interview. We learned right away that they literally were going to allow NOTHING but ourselves, our hotel key, and our documents into the building-- we were sent out of the security line to throw away coffee and to leave behind some other miscellaneous things that we had brought with us. Fortunately, the hotel we stayed at was just two blocks away.
Once inside, we waited for about 1.5 hours before being called for the first time to a window where an Ecuadorian employee reviewed our documents. This part made us nervous, first because she said I was missing a financial document of my Dad's W-2 (he did an I-864 to co-sponsor my husband) to show if he really made all the income listed on the form and that it wasn't divided between him and my mother. We arrived at the consulate at 6:30 am for our 7:15 am interview. Besides myself there weren't any other gringos there with family members. When you arrive make sure you have the print out of the email attachment with the interview information because they will keep the front page when you are going in. Also for CR1/IR1 you need 2 passport size photos. Just in case you don't need to bring your x-rays to the interview.
They let us inside the gate a little after 7 am and then we waited in a few different lines before going inside. They made us wait for about half an hour before taking our relationship evidence and remaining documents and asking a few questions. They rejected the first affidavit of support I had submitted but accepted the one I had brought to the interview just in case.
It is pretty chilly inside so don't forget to bring a sweater or wear a long sleeve shirt.

Easiest Interview EVER. Our interview was at 8:30, we arrived 30 minutes early, as requested. They called us up to the window at 10:30, went over our papers and evidence (pics, passport stamps, etc), sent my hubby to get fingerprints and then we sat back down. An hour later we went to the first window. The entire interview lasted about 60 seconds. What do we plan to do in the US, where will we live, congrats you're approved. Bam. That was it. The first guy who we worked with spoke excellent Spanish and English and was very friendly. The second guy couldn't speak Spanish and was not exactly unfriendly but certainly not warm. Honestly, I know a half a dozen people who have been approved for visas in the past year who had only been dating for a couple of weeks when they applied or PAID a USC to marry them for a GC. Everyone gets approved here anymore, it seems like.
