I had to re-schedule my interview, and this was a little painful. The Consulate basically left me a little in limbo, by saying that they would contact me. I chose to follow up regularly via email (every 2 weeks), asking if a date had become available yet, and 90% of the time they replied within 24hrs. I would advise that if you have no response within 72hrs in a normal week, then send a follow up email.
The Consulate was a little hard to find - Fortunately people in Sydney are very friendly, and I managed to navigate! I went up to the Consulate level in the lift about 30 minutes prior to my interview time. I explained that I was early - This was not an issue. They took my cell phone, and kept this until I left after my interview (No cell phones allowed inside the Consulate!)
I waited in a room with a number, and with a lot of other people. I was called to a window to basically 'check in'. Then I was called up again shortly after to give them the 'requeste... read complete review

It was so not as scary as I thought it would be. We e-mailed the consulate beforehand asking permission for myself and child to accompany my husband to his interview. They said yes and asked us to print the e-mail and bring it along with us to show the guards. But once we got there, they didn't even ask to see it. In fact, we received two checklists from NVC asking us to bring paperwork to the interview with us but they didn't ask for any of it. They did ask to see a tax document that NVC said nothing about, though. Luckily I had it!
We also brought our 21 month old with us to the interview, and they didn't let us bring our diaper bag upstairs with us. They let us take a diaper, wipes, and markers and paper to occupy him though.
The process took about an hour with maybe 5 minutes spent talking to a very friendly woman who organized our paperwork and another 5 minutes talking to a very friendly man who interviewed my husband. All in all, it was a good experience.

We had a lovely experience at the Sydney Consulate today. While the guards at security don't crack too many smiles, as long as you follow the rules (no bags or backpacks, no electronics, wallets and paperwork only) they were pleasant. Both the paperwork checker and the interviewer were pleasant and smiling.
As everyone else has said "GO TO THE BATHROOM BEFORE YOU GO THROUGH SECURITY!" We were not upstairs for as long as I thought (one hour), but I could tell it could have been much longer.
Also - if your medical report was put on a DVD or CD - make sure you tell the guards what it is. They stopped someone from bringing a CD upstairs today (thinking it was pictures, I guess), and he had to go back downstairs and get it (from the 51st floor to the 10th floor).
As one of the first same-sex married couples to come through the Consulate, we were not quite sure of the kind of reception we'd get - but there was nothing to worry about. We were ... read complete review

Had my F-1 interview yesterday and all went very smoothly. I was prepared with all uni transcripts, bank statements and so on, but they asked for the barest minimum. When I got to the interview window, the guy was professional and asked me what I was going to do in Boston. I replied that I was flying over to study for my Masters. Then he asked me which uni, and finally he asked how I was going to afford the year’s expenses as declared on the I-20. I said I was self-funded, and had cash in my bank account. And that was it! Approved
I thought it might be useful to have a quick walkthrough of the process in Melbourne, as I hadn’t seen it posted anywhere else here. For those who arrive early, the queue starts on the ground floor, probably around 30 mins beforehand. The door opened around 8am, and the main security attendant instructed everyone that they would go in in groups of four. On the other side of the door, you enter your basic details into a t... read complete review

Arrived way to early and had I known I could of just gone up (there seemed to be no order to appointment time as opposed to first-in-first served) i would have gone up instead of consuming 5 coffees and waiting for my appointment time to tick around.
One security staff member(youngish bloke) was particularly rude having a go at people for bringing their mobile phones/ suitcases etc "you are told not to bring mobile devices so i dont know why you do" EXCUSE ME SIR .. BUT PERHAPS NOT EVERYONE IS FROM AROUND SYDNEY AND NEED IT AS A WAY TO COMMUNICATE AND USE AS A GUIDANCE TOOL?? however the older staff were very pleasant and friendly.
Actual interview/er was great. Friendly, straight to the point and courteous. Asked 1 question "how did you fiance propose" then went through the papers. Approved
-1 for rude aussie guy
+4 for everyone else
