Hello. My wife came to california yesterday on CR1 visa, but i am completely clueless on what to do next? She was told at the embassy that she will get her SSN and green card withing 4 weeks, but she wan't to get a job and thats impossible without SSN. Do I just go straight to SS office and get a temporary paper that shows her number? Any help will be great. Thanks

I waited 4 weeks and it didn't arrive in the mail so I went today to the local Social Security Office and I applied for a SSN. The lady there checked in the system and she didn't find me so she accepted my application. I should receive my card in 5 days.

I think it is still $190.00 but you should check the Frankfurt Consulate's web site to be sure......You send your package from the german post office, certified mail with signature delivery, so you will receive back that the embassy got your package ...no personal checks be careful please

My POE was Cincinnati. Today, after 4 weeks in the States, I went to the Social Security Office in my town, I explained the situation there, the lady looked into the system and she saw I am not in the system. I applied again for a SSN so I suppose to receive it in 5 days in the mail. If I end up with 2 numbers, I go to return one card to their office. I really need one asap to can apply for the driving license and get a job.

If your wife doesn't have a GC yet, she needs a visa to travel to the States: tourist visa...spouse visa etc. Good luck
