We met in Costa Rica while Nikki was on vacation at a lodge, where Jairo was building cabins. It was the slow season and not many other tourists were around. Nikki spent the evenings playing games and dancing with the workers at the lodge. Over the course of a week, Jairo and Nikki developed a strong friendship and remained in contact when Nikki returned to the United States. Jairo asked Nikki to be his girlfriend via email, to which she agreed with gusto. Not knowing how a relationship between countries could work, they continued conversation and emails consistantly. Four months later, Nikki packed up and moved to Costa Rica for the experience of a lifetime, still not knowing where this relationship would lead. The two passed four gracious months together moving around in Costa Rica before Nikki decided that opportunities for their future were greater in the United States. They married and she returned to the United States to begin immigration processing. A month after arriving, she found that they were expecting their first child. Two months later, they miscarried, still thousands of miles apart. The journey was very difficult, but after 8 very long months on a hot August day, Jairo arrived to be with his wife in the United States. Four months later, the discovered their love had developed another life, another child who is to be born near the end of August - one year from Jairo's arrival to the United States!
