Jay and I met in 2005 at a six-week writing workshop in Manchester, New Hampshire (it's called 'Odyssey' -- www.sff.net/odyssey/) -- he grew up in Toronto, I grew up in San Diego, and both of us write fiction. At the time I lived in CA, but was moving to NY for a job near where I'd gone to college, and we emailed after the workshop, which was a fantastic life-changing experience for us both. We grew closer over email, and because we weren't too far away (about 3.5 hours, Albany NY and Kingston ON) we decided to catch up again in person in October 2006. In August 2007 I moved up to Clayton NY to be closer to him (1 hour away), and in April 2008 came up to visit with him for the summer; in July he proposed! We'd planned to move to California -- he is finishing his dissertation at the Royal Military College of Canada in the history of science and warfare, and I got a very lucrative job offer back out in CA. We have a terrific new apartment in Long Beach (after visiting out there in July, and him meeting my family in San Diego), I'll be moving out there at the end of August, and he'll visit for a month before coming back to Kingston to defend his dissertation (and become "Doctor Jay") and complete the NOA2 side of the visa process.
