Medical Insurance for K1 Fiance
Lemonslice replied to thonati's topic in Moving to the US and Your New Life In America
Would you move to a warmer state if she was not able to handle the cold winters? I think it is a good discussion to have now, so she can make plans to return home if you don't. You seem to have found a solution to the insurance questions, good luck with the rest of your journey. -

Affidavit supporting father's paternity
Lemonslice replied to Gen_X's topic in Consular Reports of Birth Abroad (CRBA)
If they have questions about the paternity of your child, they will ask for DNA tests. You can send affidavits, but evidence that you were together about 9 months before the birth might be stronger; do you have passport stamps from a visit around those dates? If so, I would include them. Personally, I would not add a comment about "this is the trip our child was conceived", that would be TMI for me, and, if they do have doubts, they will request a DNA test anyway. -
Translated Documents
Lemonslice replied to harvardiv's topic in K-1 Fiance(e) Visa Process & Procedures
Without knowing where she is from, where she has lived, where her documents are from, and where she will interview, no one will be able to answer your question. Best of luck. -
Cautionary tale Social Security Card name change
Lemonslice replied to ATCSUSNRET's topic in Social Security Numbers
She has a SSN, so should be even easier... Just use her maiden name and keep the energy to do name change everywhere once an official official document (EAD or PR card) is issued. -
Cautionary tale Social Security Card name change
Lemonslice replied to ATCSUSNRET's topic in Social Security Numbers
As I understand the initial post, his spouse has a SSN already, so I am not sure a placeholder would be necessary. -
Cautionary tale Social Security Card name change
Lemonslice replied to ATCSUSNRET's topic in Social Security Numbers
As I said, I wish you the best of luck. My husband was able to add me to whatever system at the VA without me changing my name, so there has to be a way... We actually bank with Navy Federal, but Indiana gets too cold in the winter for me! Please keep us updated, will be interesting to see if they are able to help you at the other office. -
Cautionary tale Social Security Card name change
Lemonslice replied to ATCSUSNRET's topic in Social Security Numbers
Why not? Many spouses do not change their name and are able to get those benefits; also, her number won't change. You do you, but you might be creating your own hurdles now. -
Cautionary tale Social Security Card name change
Lemonslice replied to ATCSUSNRET's topic in Social Security Numbers
As far as I know, your spouse will not be able to change her name until she receives an official document from USCIS in that name (EAD, PR card, etc.). I will let others with more recent experience chime in, but it might not be worth to do the drive to another office. The service at my SSA office is very pleasant, the DMV on the other hand... I guess some offices just have a culture of bad service. Best of luck. -
Possible mistake made by interviewer

Diplomatic missions abroad are closed for a selection of local and US holidays. Since your interview, there's been Juneteenth, Fête nationale du Québec, Canada Day, and now Independence Day... Not sure if they worked any of those, but it's going to delay the final approval for sure. I would wait another week before sending an inquiry.

N-400 January 2024 filers
Lemonslice replied to Rearviewmirror's topic in US Citizenship Case Filing and Progress Reports
Not unusual. Many do not file for citizenship, they get approved eventually, with or without interview. -
Many employers are letting employees on parental leave stay on the health insurance, some requiring that you pay the employer's share of the premium. You might want to look into it. Otherwise, you might look into all the instructions for the affidavit of support; see if you have enough assets to qualify without income.

I am not going to say that some people are buying refundable tickets just to get "in person" passport service (for US passport, or foreign at some diplomatic mission), but maybe some are, or so I have heard (and seen). The extra cost for in person/express/urgent processing might be less than the cost of documents to be replaced, if lost, and that is not counting the cost of stress. I would never recommend to lie, but travel plans can change 🤷♀️

GCSE/GED Conversion?
Lemonslice replied to Melancholic Mage's topic in Moving to the US and Your New Life In America
Schools might request an equivalency, most employers won't request anything like that. Maybe if you're a very young adult, they might want to see documents, but usually they'll take your word/see other work experience that would have required some education. -
Is there anyway to become a citizen without the test?
Lemonslice replied to TVC's topic in US Citizenship General Discussion
Many community centers are offering coaching for the interview. In my city, some volunteer lawyers and retired USCIS agents do mock interviews. Please tell your spouse that there's help for her out there! -
K1 for Canadians
Lemonslice replied to Sternutator's topic in K-1 Fiance(e) Visa Process & Procedures
Spousal visa, or fiancé, the interview will be in Montréal. Also, you might want to compare the pros and cons, K1 is seldom the best option for Canadians. Member @Crazy Cat has a nice compilation he built over the years. Best of luck! -
You need to discuss finances with your spouse. If you have no savings, then he absolutely has to support you since you are stuck unable to work. Ask him when you could go to the grocery together so you can plan your meals for the week, while he his at work. If you are uncomfortable, then you can tell him that you are, and that you would like to plan to pay for a getaway weekend/your first car/deposit on your apartment/[whatever fits your situation] once you are able to work. Do not starve yourself.
