My sponsor checked the box of “self employed “ on his tax return can this be the reason of him not getting w2?

I have filled all required documents to the nvc. Recently they asked for my sponsor’s w2 when I contacted him he said he did not receive a w2 for that year , but he still have 1040 form and I can submit it. Is it normal that he didn’t receive w2 for that year ?? Is it can the nvc accept my 1040 form instead of w2?
