Need advice - Immigrate to USA as a refugee

FYI, I am currently a protected person in Canada. I am not in USA. -
Hi there, I am currently a protected person and have applied for Permanent Residency, which is still in process. My passport from my home country is not in my possession. In the meantime, I married a U.S. citizen, and she will be applying for a CR1 spouse visa for me. I do not yet have a Refugee Travel Document, as it is still being processed. If my wife applies for the CR1 spouse visa on my behalf, will I need a passport to obtain the U.S. immigration visa, or will the Refugee Travel Document suffice? Any guidance would be greatly appreciated. I understand that the RTD is generally used for travel purposes and many people got their non-immigrant visa (Visit Visa) on RTD. Thank you!
