  1. I entered the US via the EWR POE last week and became a permanent resident. It was a long journey, one which was first dreamt of more than 25 years ago when I was a college student (F-1) in the US. Back then I tried to stay through legal means such as the DV lottery, OPT, H1B etc... but in the end I exhausted all avenues and ended up moving back to my home country (Canada). Had a family member who got naturalized so was able to sponsor me back in 2006...and it took about 13 years for the priority date to be current. By then I was pretty well settled at home with a good job and family, and had no intention of moving back to the US. So dragged our feet by checking in with the NVC every 11 months, submitting documents slowly, rescheduling consulate interviews, COVID delays etc etc. But we could not delay things any longer and eventually took the plunge. Will still be a year or so before we move permanently as I have some business & family obligations here, but did not want to let the opportunity slip by. It was weird to hear the CBP officer say "Welcome to the United States, and good luck." And I have to say immigrating to the US now feels bittersweet in light of everything that is going on with the new administration. Here is hoping for sunnier days. And wishing everyone well on your individual journies.
  2. Thank you... but what I'm also confused by is how I would "use" this document. As a Canadian passport holder I don't ever need to show anything such as a visa or GC to board a flight to the US and as a Nexus card holder I don't even interact with CBP officers all that much because I can use Global Entry. I can't recall the last time anyone checked my travel documents usually the GE machines take your photo and off you go. I guess if I get a re-entry permit that will be tied to my passport and if CBP wants to question me further on the basis of my travels being flagged (randomly or otherwise) that's when I would produce the said travel document?
  3. Can one travel with a re-entry permit multiple times or is it supposed to be used only once to re-enter the US? I'm in a similar situation as the OP's spouse in that I need 1-2 yrs to wind things down before I can permanently settle. Which means I may need to travel back & forth between my home country and the US in the next little while with more days being spent abroad than here (although definitely entering the US every 3 months). In order not to field any questions re absences abroad I was thinking about getting a re-entry permit but once I get one I will still continue to travel to the US frequently vs. being absent for more than a year which I believe is the whole point of this document. Would this be an issue?
  4. Thanks for the response, and I am familiar with that info. What I was actually asking is we don't want to "activate" our green cards until December, but may need to travel to the US before then for a short trip. Is it possible to do that? Or as soon as you have a visa in your passport the next time you travel to the US the visa is "activated"?
  5. Hi everyone, Our family based immigrant visa has been issued with the usual 6-month validity but due to family circumstances we will not be ready to immigrate until the end of the year. Is it possible to travel to the US during this time on short visits without actually immigrating, or is the first time you enter the US after IV issuance considered officially immigrating? Specifically, is it possible for the derivative family members to travel during this time if the main beneficiary does not, or will there be issues at the border? Since I'm a Canadian citizen I can travel to the US without a visa and on top of that I have Nexus which means I can even travel to the US from Canada without my passport. But will this create issues at the border because I assume CBP can see in their system that we have been issued immigrant visas. Thanks for your feedback.
