Health Insurance for Immigrating Spouse
miha25 replied to miha25's topic in Moving to the US and Your New Life In America
That's great they were able to add your wife and stepdaughter prior to their entrance and without a SS number. It would be prudent for anyone in this situation who has coverage with their employer to do the same. Agreed on it being a positive thing for the interview. -
Health Insurance for Immigrating Spouse

This doesn't apply to me because I'm self-employed and purchase my own insurance from the marketplace, but my concern with what your enrollment person said is, what happens if your spouse has a medical emergency before they complete enrollment. Given their answer, what is the precise day he/she/they would be covered? I personally wouldn't risk my spouse being in the US for a day without coverage. A simple ER visit could cost thousands, let alone a more serious emergency. -

I think you're correct, that I can't add my spouse until we have the SS number. Obtaining a TIN number would take too long at this point and we're better off waiting on the SS number and buying private travel insurance with US coverage. The cost of travel health insurance can basically be broken down into two categories: 1) The entire world without US coverage and 2) The entire world with US coverage, and the cost difference between the two is outrageous, another topic altogether, sigh. -

Thanks so much for responding. I'm self-employed, though, so have to buy from the marketplace. On your urging, I'll give them a call (in Connecticut it's handled by the state), to see what they say. I'll post here again if anyone is in the same position. -
Does anyone know the process for obtaining health insurance in the US for an incoming spouse given the lack of ITIN or SS number? With the cost of healthcare in the US, I don't want my partner stepping foot in the US without coverage. Either an ITIN or SS number are necessary to sign up for coverage, but is the SS number generated immediately at the consular interview? If you've obtained health insurance for your incoming spouse, will you share how you handled this prior to them entering the country?

August 2023 I-130 filers
miha25 replied to Dan and Akari's topic in IR-1 / CR-1 Spouse Visa Case Filing and Progress Reports
For Dreamer25: We received our NVC notice of receipt within four days of being approved. We paid the processing fees the same day but are still waiting for them to be in ‘paid’ status. Maybe you should try reaching I out to Emma/INFOPASS for help since you already tried the NVC? It does state up to 45 days for the USCIS-NVC handoff, but from what I’ve been reading it’s typically just a couple of weeks. I hope it’ll be soon for you. -

Still no news here. Any other August people still waiting? I called Emma/INFOPASS and we’re still at the Texas center where we’ve apparently always been. The agent said, if I’d like, I can file an appeal next summer. We’re an older couple and our time together is limited enough as it is. This is such a heartbreaking process. -

How do you know if your case was transferred? We just have the first NOA letter as an attachment which reads Nebraska. Is the transfer posted elsewhere in MYUSCIS or on another site? -

But I think if you look at all previous months, the unapproved 25-30% range remains for a very long time. It’s my understanding that that percentage is for cases which are more complex, i.e., by people petitioning for additional dependents, from field offices and so forth, but that straightforward cases are generally approved within 15 months. -

Perhaps the petition for your additional child is cause for delay? From what I can tell on this forum, it seems they’re up to around August 29th today. August 4th petitions were processed a few weeks ago. If I were you, I think I would consider reaching out for help at this point. Does anyone know if there’s a number to call if a petition seems to be stagnant, or if there are attorneys who might be able to help with GMF’s situation? -

My "progress" tab disappeared, too. Maybe they're just doing away with that section? Or maybe it means something! -

If you were approved this week, will you share your dates with us? Wondering which days were approved this week. Last week they seemed to be at about August 10th, so hoping they moved to at least August 17th this week? -

It seems like they got to about August 9th last Friday, and now August 11th today? Has anyone later in August been approved? We're August 30th, crickets for us. -

I'm seeing the same thing on TMV...nothing done since last Friday, the 11th. Let's hope this is some sort of glitch and not really true. -

Thanks for the encouragement, E. Our standalone i-130 estimated approval date vacillates somewhat, too, but this December 12th date was a bit of a shock after, "any day now" last week. Did anyone else get an estimated date in December? -

Just received my weekly estimate and it went from "any day now" last week to "December 12th", which would be sixteen months for processing. Did anyone else get this upsetting estimation today? Hoping this was some sort of error. -

OP, thanks so much for this thread. I guess we can just chalk it up to your and your wife's application being in the right place at the right time. We'll probably never know why your processing was so amazingly quick, but thank you for empathizing with the rest of us. Sander, thanks so much for your thoughts, too. Your explanation makes sense. On Sunday I received VisaJourney's weekly timeframe estimate and it did say, "Any day now" which was thrilling given the last estimate of November, if I'm remembering correctly. Hopefully this turns out to be true for we August filers still waiting on the edge of our seats. -
I’ve read various official and legal websites and I’m still confused on the documents I, as the petitioner, need to provide after after our i-130 is approved (the NVC segment). From what i can tell, only my passport and financial docs that support the i-864 are required. Is that the case? I know the beneficiary (my spouse) has to supply his docs (birth certificate, police, marriage/divorce docs, etc.), but is it true all we petitioners need is our passport and financial docs (tax return and other finanical docs for the i-864)? Or if we petitioners need marriage/divorce docs, will you include a reference/link in your response? Thank you!

The 60% observation above is very helpful! Besides being lucky people, I always wonder who the ~33% approved are months ahead of the remaining 66% in the agonizing now 13+ months wait. Or maybe I’m reading the charts incorrectly?
