Does the co-sponsor file a seperate I-864? He's married. Does he file with his wife? (They file taxes jointly.) - yes he does. he will check the box on the I-864 "I am the only joint sponsor". his wife would fill out an I-864A. https://www.uscis.gov/i-864a. Is it correct that we do not need to file a separate I-864 for my step-daughter? - All intending immigrants must file an I-864 with their AOS packet. However, it can be just a copy of the one you fill out for your husband. From the I-864 instructions: "Who Needs to Submit Form I-864? In general, the following immigrants are required by law to submit Form I-864 completed by the petitioner to obtain an immigrant visa overseas or to adjust status to that of a lawful permanent resident in the United States: Person admitted to the United States as a K-1 nonimmigrant fiancé(e) or K-2 nonimmigrant child of a fiancé(e) of a U.S. citizen and who seeks to adjust status on that basis" What do I check off on my I-864 to indicate that there is a co-sponsor (to cover the fact that I won't meet the % requirement.) - the only thing you check on your I-864 is the first option "I am the petitioner. I filed or an filing for the immigration of my relative" include a cover letter with you I-864, you can state in there that you are using a joint sponsor. The doc from the US embassy in France who did his medical exam gave him a hard time about vaccs that he already had (she marked that he didn't have them when he had proof that he did... it was one of the ones you get in 2 or 3 and he had the 3.) He literally got everything that was on the list but apparently they changed the requirement the day before his appointment. In any case, I think that means we have to get him signed off by a civil surgeon? Where do we go for that? I did do a search and came up with a list of names locally... is it just a doctor with a specific certification from the government? - you can use this from the USCIS site to find a civil surgeon https://www.uscis.gov/tools/find-a-civil-surgeon. you may want to shop around. a lot of them will not just do the vaccine portion of the I-693. My husband and step daughter won't be active on my insurance until October. I don't know if it's wise to wait so I guess we're paying oop for that. - this is not covered by medical insurance any way. you will have to pay out of pocket regardless. Facts that may or may not be relevant: The co-sponsor does not live with us. He is a family member. Also, for the I-765, (auth to work) do we have to file for the I-864 first? - you file ALL forms together (I-485, I-864, I-765) in the same packet. I highly suggest watching some YouTube videos from people on how they organized their packets. It helped us a lot when we were putting ours together. I also highly suggest you read the instructions for the I-864. This is the thing that most people get RFEs for - https://www.uscis.gov/i-864 - https://www.uscis.gov/sites/default/files/document/forms/i-864instr.pdf read it till your eyes bleed LOL

nonimmigrant visa or immigrant?
MalloryCat replied to flyboyof3's topic in K-1 Fiance(e) Visa Process & Procedures
are you referring to the DS-160/DS-260? if so, your fiance fills out the DS-160 -
been almost a month since our interview and we still haven't heard anything.. looking at timelines here for our office (which i know is a really small percentage of all cases) almost all got their interview result by the next day.... i'm not sure why ours would be different, but its very unsettling that it seems to be taking longer... lol

March 2025 AOS Filers
MalloryCat replied to KStr2022's topic in Adjustment of Status Case Filing and Progress Reports
we uploaded everything separate and named the files based on what it was. this is probably preferred so the officer knows what to expect when they open the file. -
Late submission!
MalloryCat replied to Westside27's topic in K-1 Fiance(e) Visa Process & Procedures
the I-129f requires meeting in person at least once within 2 years of filing, regardless of past meetings as far as i know. so you would have to see each other again in person, or you risk your application being denied. -

if what has been over 2 years? do you mean you haven't seen your partner in person in over 2 years? -
K1 Visa Lagos - DS-160, please help
MalloryCat replied to Eric Perales's topic in Africa: Sub-Saharan
this seems like the site you want to go through you submit the DS-160 and then register with Lagos visa appointment handler and schedule the interview and document review there https://www.usvisaappt.com/visa/page?country=NG&apiPageName=kVisa&locale=en I also found this information from the Lagos visa navigator "K1 applicants must email LagosIV@state.gov to schedule an immigrant visa interview appointment. Applicants must include the following information in their email: USE THIS SUBJECT LINE: M66 – K1 SCHEDULING - FULL NAME - CASE NUMBER Petitioner’s First and Last name Beneficiary’s Frist and Last Name Immigrant Visa Case Number (starting with three letters) Attach a copy of Beneficiary’s passport bio page " https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSdMSMzJmoYVaxf-obif6_AaMIT4fbxpIvLEkPW84ISGSwSkIg/viewform - Lagos visa navigator, follow option for immigrant visas, and then K1 Processing -
K1 Visa Lagos - DS-160, please help
MalloryCat replied to Eric Perales's topic in Africa: Sub-Saharan
that i am unsure of no it shouldn't cause any issues. just make sure that everything that is input into the DS-160 is accurate and as up to date as possible. how long has the case been in ready status? wait times for Nigeria are very long, so it could be a few months before you hear anything from the embassy. also something to keep in mind when submitting the DS-160, if you do it too soon and you haven't heard from the embassy yet, you risk it expiring. -
K1 Visa Lagos - DS-160, please help
MalloryCat replied to Eric Perales's topic in Africa: Sub-Saharan
a submitted DS-160 is valid for 1 year. you can submit it and pay the visa at any point really. view the information here that references K1 visas https://ng.usembassy.gov/immigrant-visas-processing-in-lagos/ it appears that the embassy may email the applicant: "Certain applicants may be emailed by the consulate and asked to schedule an appointment in our online scheduling platform. Please monitor the email address you have previously provided on your application materials, as we may send you important instructions after we accept your case from NVC." have you tried emailing the embassy directly at all? this appears to be the best email to contact them at - nigeria@usvisaappt.com if you do email them, make sure to include the NVC case number and applicants name in the subject line -
South Africa K-1 interview process
MalloryCat replied to fbgmlae's topic in K-1 Fiance(e) Visa Process & Procedures
i found one thing on reddit which led me to the DOS site with this notice. https://travel.state.gov/content/travel/en/us-visas/Supplements/Supplements_by_Post/JHN-Johannesburg.html "the U.S. Consulate Johannesburg requires that one member from your applicant group present yourself for a document review on the Wednesday morning two weeks prior to your Thursday interview(i.e 2 weeks and 1 day before the interview). Not attending this document review appointment in advance of your interview may result in your interview being cancelled. If you appear for your interview without having first completed the document review and are missing required documents, you will be turned away and will need to reschedule your interview. Civil documents – to include birth, marriage, and divorce certificates, police clearances, etc. – are described as required for your country on Travel.State.Gov. You do not need to make a separate appointment for document review, and you do not need to change your existing interview appointment unless you cannot attend the document review appointment. If you have any questions about attending the document review appointment, please email JohannesburgIV@state.gov. " it sounds like, the applicant would just go to the embassy 2 weeks in advance for the document review, no appointment needed. that is my understanding from this. this was just updated on July 1, 2025. So this seems to be a new requirement from Johannesburg. possibly to cut down on wait times for the actual interviews. **it does not state, at least from what i can see, that this only applies to certain types of visas. -
South Africa K-1 interview process
MalloryCat replied to fbgmlae's topic in K-1 Fiance(e) Visa Process & Procedures
interpreters are not provided by the embassy. the applicant would have to find someone who is fluent in both their language and in english. And that person would come to the interview with them. The interpreter would have to have a valid form of ID that would allow them to enter government buildings (most typically a passport) and just inform the officers there that they will be interpreting. that is all they would need to do. she will have to figure out a way to make it to the document review appointment, there is no way getting around that. -
just a tidbit for anyone the I-129f/K1 visa applicants don't receive a "welcome letter" from the NVC. the welcome letter is for certain types of visas, typically immigrant visas (like the spousal), where all documents are submitted to the NVC and the NVC schedules interviews for those visas. K1 visas are technically nonimmigrant visas, so K1 visa applicants schedule their interview themselves (for the most part) and bring their documents to their embassy at the time of the interview. you'll more than likely get an email or letter from your embassy for next steps. good luck!

police clearance for k1 visa packet
MalloryCat replied to dust moss's topic in K-1 Fiance(e) Visa Process & Procedures
the police clearance will only be brought to the interview no need to provide it with the I-129f packet the petitioner sends in. the only police records that get sent in with the I-129f would be those belonging to the US Citizen petitioner. but if they don't have any criminal record, it is not required. -
K1 applicants schedule their own interview the embassy will more than likely email you instructions on how to do that you can use their visa navigator here: https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSc5YKylou9elcYnYrcdCE5sbqv03bc3yZxuJxBsePBPzvQg1A/formResponse follow the options for immigrant visas and it will give you a way to contact the embassy to ask questions. or you can email them here: support-morocco@ustraveldocs.com also for the K1 interview, you will need to fill out the I-134**. the I-864 will be for her adjustment of status (greencard application) after she is in the US and you have gotten married.

you schedule your own interview be aware that waiting times for Lagos are more than likely very long you can try contacting the embassy using this email nigeria@usvisaappt.com or you can check the regional forums for more information https://www.visajourney.com/forums/forum/89-africa-sub-saharan/ this post is from 2018, but it may be helpful.
