Doing taxes when married to foreign spouse
InaneTripe replied to sam3435's topic in Tax & Finances During US Immigration
After our marriage but before my wife arrived in the US, I always filed as "Married filing separately". This caused problems with my online tax service because they required my wife's SSN even for MFS, but of course she didn't have one. Therefore, I filed paper returns as MFS with my wife's name listed on the return. In fact, this was one of the documents I submitted as proof of a bona-fide marriage. I am not sure how much probative value this particular document had but I figured it wouldn't hurt. Now that my wife is in the US, I'll file as MFJ for TY 2023. -
220 U.S dollars for a green card?
InaneTripe replied to Dante2019's topic in General Immigration-Related Discussion
Yes, this fee is required as stated at https://www.uscis.gov/forms/filing-fees/uscis-immigrant-fee. When my wife received her immigrant visa from the Tokyo embassy, they included a notice regarding this fee and details on paying it. -
I tried calling their 1-800 number but there appears to be no way to reach a live agent. When you say "green card not received", the voice prompts you to send an e-request. Asking for "live agent" over and over just returns the response "Your call will be disconnected"! I honestly have no idea how to actually speak to someone. After my 90 days are up, I'll try calling again and ask for "Infopass". Perhaps that'd work? Good luck!

Can't register appointment Madrid
InaneTripe replied to Bethliza's topic in IR-1 / CR-1 Spouse Visa Process & Procedures
Looks like an embassy specific requirement for Madrid. I'd give it a day or two and then try again. -
Thank you for your kind words! Did you contact USCIS by phone or did you send an e-request for the missing GC?
-
Omg, that is quite the story! Couldn't they figure out that your daughter being a *new* immigrant meant that she could not be the other person with the same name and DOB? I guess their system isn't that sophisticated.
-
Thank you for the advice! I'll plan to do just that. It is weird they can just sleep on the case after having received the $220 fee and wait for us to reach out to them first!

77 days since US entry and still waiting for the GC. Status remains stuck at "Visa Fee Payment Received". Sigh...

I can speak from somewhat recent experience. We got an RFE for our I-130 on May 1, 2023 which caused me a great deal of stress until I saw the actual RFE notice requesting the final divorce decree for my previous marriage. Turns out than in haste, I had only submitted a divorce nisi judgment with my original application. Anyway, I uploaded the final decree to my online account on May 9, 2023 and the petition was approved on May 10! I've read of very short turnaround times on RFE responses for others as well. The point I am trying to make is please don't assume the worst. Wait till you get the RFE notice and respond in an accurate and timely manner and your case will be adjudicated soon thereafter. All the best to you both!

My spouse entered the US on December 13, 2023 and never received the SS card although we said "YES" to the corresponding questions in the DS-260. She has an appointment at the Austin, TX SSA office later this month so that we can apply in person. Austin doesn't allow walk-ins for new applications and thus the need for a long wait for our appointment. Good luck with your GC and SS!

My foreign spouse's details are: POE : LAX (Los Angeles) Category : IR-1 Date of Entry : 13 December 2023 The online status still reads "Visa Fee Payment Received" and so the wait continues. I might add that we never received her SS card although we responded "Yes" to the corresponding question in DS-260. The local SSA office in Austin doesn't accept walk-ins for new SS cards (which is not mentioned anywhere online, btw) and so we are waiting for our upcoming appointment date as well.

Appointment required to apply for first time SSN/card?
InaneTripe replied to InaneTripe's topic in Social Security Numbers
Many thanks for your kind words! Our USCIS process took a while but was entirely trouble free. To think that I am having more issues with the SSN which ought to have been straightforward! -
Appointment required to apply for first time SSN/card?
InaneTripe replied to InaneTripe's topic in Social Security Numbers
Right. The agent at the first office kept repeating "make an online appointment" and wouldn't even listen to my pleadings as to why that was not possible in our situation. The agent at the second office scheduled us in but I suspect he had access to a link or systems that outsiders don't. I spent a lot of time before and after using a variety of browsers and search engines to unearth this magic link but with no success. Also, I'll add that I had requested in the DS-260 that an SSN be automatically assigned. However, there was no sign of a card in the mail although my spouse arrived as an IR1 over 6 weeks ago. -
Hello y'all, My foreign citizen spouse and I visited not one, but *two*, SSA offices in Austin, Texas today and were told at both places that appointments are now required for all first-time SSN/card applicants. The Kafkaesque element lies in the fact that nowhere on the blessed ssa.gov site can I find a link to schedule an appointment. It does give you the option to schedule at the end of the online SS-5 application but that requires an account which you cannot create witout a SSN in the first place! Of course, my wife doesn't have an SSN and couldn't avail of this "feature". Furthermore, an agent on the 1-800 line told me that they couldn't schedule in-person appointments in Austin. An employee at the second Austin SSA office did schedule us for a late Feb date using their terminal. He was insistent that he did so from www.ssa.gov but in all my searching I couldn't find the page where outsiders such as myself could schedule without a login.gov or ID.me account. My question is whether others have run into this issue? The helpful SSA officer did tell me that the process for first time applicants changed around 6 weeks ago. Not sure whether this is a Texas only thing or nationwide. I'd really appreciate some insights, recent experiences with SSA. Thank you!

APRIL 2022 FILERS (I-130)
InaneTripe replied to Orzo's topic in IR-1 / CR-1 Spouse Visa Case Filing and Progress Reports
Aprill 22, 2022 online filer here. Case transferred from NBC->VSC from the start. My status updated to "Request for initial evidence sent" on May 1, 2023. The actual RFE notice is nowhere to be found in my online account. Waiting nervously for it to show up there! Is there anyone else in the same boat? -
Apologies if this question has been asked and answered previously. My online account states that "Request For Initial Evidence Was Sent on May 1 2023". My concern is that I am presently out of the country visiting my wife and am not able to retrieve USPS mail sent to my US address. Furthermore, I don't see the RFE notice under the Documents tab although it is already the evening of May 2. My question is whether I can expect the RFE notice to be available in my account? Is this delay between the case status update and the notice not being available common? Have others been able to view their RFE notices online? Thank you for any observations you might have!
