  1. i didn't realize it's 3 years instead of 5 years for greencard holder who is married to US citizen! LPR starts with conditional GC, right?
  2. What is the next step? Removal of conditions and then N400 in 5 years minus 9 months? Does that clock start as of the day of i485 approval, which is today for us? yes, local office is Boston.
  3. i'm going to wait for GC and give it a few weeks after for SSN. I applied for SSN as part of EAD and 485. Maybe somehow it clashed, I don't know.
  4. We went to SSA after we didn't get requested SSN as part of EAD. They told us they see her in the system, but couldn't apply for SSN in the office and that we just had to wait. They said it wasn't the first case and something was holding things up on immigration side of things. So maybe we get it now. I already file for tax extension bc of that.
  5. we still didn't get the SSN with EAD that was received 2 months ago. I wonder if it will come with GC now?
  6. I married someone on ESTA and we applied for a GC in December and today we got a notification that i485 was approved. Less than 4 months! How is it possible??
  7. looks like it should arrive within 7 days? Please contact a Social Security office if you do not receive your SSN card within seven business days after receiving your EAD or "Green Card". Please have this flyer and your EAD or "Green Card" as it may help us answer your questions.
  8. we got the EAD card today. paperwork was received by USCIS on 12/19, so it took only 1.5 month. much faster then anticipated. the case is closed on USCIS web site. so i assume we won't get any update on the timeline for SSN card?
  9. does every employer do I-9 form? i think the answer to that would resolve my confusion.
  10. i moved to US on H1b in 1999 and except the original employer, once i got the GC i changed many employers and nobody cared for my status. my wife is adjusting on marriage based grounds. she is about to receive the EAD.
  11. silly question. let's say i-485 gets denied, which invalidates the EAD. in my field (software engineering) nobody cares about immigration status. and as long as one has SSN, they are ok. how does it work then?
  12. thank you for responses everyone. what happens to EAD/SSN if i-485 doesn't get approved? I would assume EAD would be invalid, but how about SSN?
  13. So it seems like SSN arrives some weeks later after EAD. Which seems strange to me, since EAD is literally an authorization to work. I assume there is no point to look for work until SSN arrives? Also, does approval for EAD along say anything about overall chances for i-485 being approved?
  14. does it mean i don't care about this at all and she can work for any employer without letting USCIS know?
  15. no, it's marriage base adjustment. I'm an US citizen and she is beneficiary. we filed marriage based I-130 and EAD/AP with i-485.
  16. We got an EAD approval notice today. Only 1 month and 12 days later after USCIS received! Looking at the notice I see this section: "If you have a pending or approved Form I-140 and a pending Form I-485, you may request to change employers if your Form I-485 has been pending for at least 180 days. In order to do so, you need to submit documentation about your new job offer. For more information on how to request a change of employers and what information you must submit, please visit the USCIS website at www.uscis.gov. If your EAD card expires before we make a final decision on your Form I-485, you may apply for a new EAD card." My wife, who is the recipient of this EAD, is currently unemployed. But she has an employer lined up. Can she just start working for that employer? The text above implies that EAD is tied to a specific employer. Does she need to do anything in that regard? Like let USCIS know who is going to be her employer? And what is the process if she decides to change an employer in the future? Thanks!
  17. Hello, I'm a petitioner and I filed I-103 for my wife. I have an USCIS online account and I can see my I-130 case there. We recently got NOAs for I-131, I-485 and I-765. All of them have IOE receipt numbers. I can't add these cases to my account, since I'm a petitioner and these cases are for the beneficiary. I had her create a new USCIS account with her email address mentioned on all the forms. When I try to add the cases there it asks for online access code that is supposed to be on the NOAs. The thing is it's not mentioned on any of the NOAs at all. Are we supposed to get another letter? This part from the USCIS implies that there could be another letter: "It can take up to 30 days to receive your Account Notice that includes your Online Access Code. If it has been more than 30 days since you submitted your case and you have not received your code, you should request a new one."
  18. CrazyCat, So you still think as long as I have a doc that will show 12 months valid stay going forward it should be ok? and I don't need to wait for 12 months of actual lawful stay?
  19. Unfortunately I don't think that I misinterpret (lawful presence stay must be at least 12 months):
  20. I am planning on using EAD. But another requirement is "All immigration documents must show a valid 12-month stay in the U.S.". So back to my original question - what marks the beginning of lawful stay, and how i show it to people at RMV/DMV? Thank you
