Our Story
Joe and I crossed paths on a penpal website just before the pandemic broke out. This was at a time when the governments across the world had told people to start quarantine and avoid public places. My job meant that I had to stay at home and so I thought about passing the time by speaking with various people around the world.
I had spoken with various people before stumbling across Joe's account. I clicked his profile and it read "will help improve your English in return for Spanish" so I thought to myself 'He won't be interested in talking to someone from England' and moved on. Moments later, I receive a message from an American profile, it's Joe and he has checked out my profile.
He sends me this very pleasant email, introducing himself, and politely invites me to keep in touch. Of course, I respond, he responds, then I respond until we both decide to exchange numbers and talk on Whatsapp.
We texted each other, sent voice notes, updates, the lot! It was then time to chat over the phone... nerve-racking to say the least! As soon as the line connected, I felt the biggest blanket of ease, it was as if I'd known him for years!
A month or so later, I invite him over to England but before that, we fell in love. We talked for a minimum of 5 hours each day, I stayed up until 7am to listen to his stories and laugh with him. We joked around and referred to each other as "husband and wife" because that's truly how it felt.
Joe kept his promise and visited me in England. Whilst here, he said to me "I'm going to marry you. If I don't marry YOU, I'll never marry at all".
He proposed to me while punting in Cambridge, England.
Since then, he has travelled back and forth to see be with me during the pandemic. There hasn't been a day where we've not spoken to one another since the first day. We truly are best friends and I'm so pleased that we met when we did.
