I married a U.S. citizen in January 2022 and I'm wondering what the best route is to get myself and my two boys to the U.S. to live and become permanent residents. We are currently living in Canada. I will be retiring at the end of January 2023. I will be able to go to the U.S. after that. My 2 boys are stepsons and will not be able to follow until a couple of years after that. I want to start the process for us all, but I would like to unite with my husband in February. My oldest son is 21 years of age and "aged out" before we were married. My youngest son was 17 years old when we married.
Do I go to the U.S., and then apply for a green card or apply through I-130 first? My youngest son meets the "derivative relative" category and my oldest, the "preference family" category, I believe. If there is a better way, I would love to hear from you, the experts :)
Thank you,
Tracey
