  1. Wondering if anyone has any advice regarding taxes ... I worked until January 25 in Canada (approx 3k gross) then moved to USA. I have a pension plan that I'd like to take the cash payout on, which is about 8500$ pre-tax withholdings (about 6800$ after the 20% taxes come off) Will I be filing taxes in Canada for January 1-23rd? I assume yes, in which I will claim the 3,000$ from work and the 8500$? Or just the 6800$? In addition to that, when the time comes to file my US taxes next year, am I reclaiming that 11,500$ as income, or is it separate? Do I claim my US income for the rest of this year in Canada too? I'm just so lost and don't even know where to begin to find someone who knows the answers...
  2. Land crossing! Through Maine (it begins with a P...I can't remember right now...lol) .. I came from NS and through NB and then crossed. It went well overall, there was a small hiccup but it was nothing I could control. Somehow there was 2 copies of my application in their system exactly the same, so he spent about an hour calling around for me to figure out what the deal was. I was stressing cause I didn't know what was happening til afterwards. They needed my marriage certificate which I had, but had to dig to find it in the car, as well as my passport. I was not importing my car so I had a letter from GM saying I could have it there with me. I saw people say to put a pack list of your stuff, but I didn't. I didn't have a ton. Clothes vacuumed sealed on top in a cargo carrier, and then the back of my SUV with 'stuff' in Ikea zipper bags (loved this for organizing and packing, way better than boxes!!!) I also had my cat with me and had paperwork for him of his shots and health but the agent didn't want to see it. They were able to update my address for me as my husband has moved since and it was good cause I got my SSN.
  3. Just wanted to pop back on here and say hello again! I am officially in USA as of Jan 27th. Crossing went super well, and I'm adjusting well here. My SSN came pretty quick as well! I still have all intents to make a longer post about my interview and so on, but just have been so slammed with life the past few months !
  4. I'm wondering how I tell what my first name is now.. My name was Katie-Name (hyphenated) Middlename Lastname, legally my first name was Katie-Name in Canada. On my Visa in my passport it says .. Given Name Katie Name Middlename at the bottom it says VIUSALASTNAME>>KATIE>NAME>MIDDLENAME<<<<< So is my legal first name just Katie, or is it Katie Name Middlename? I cross Saturday and I'll probably ask but sounds like a dumb question and I don't want to raise suspicions ?
  5. Thank you! I got it paid! it shows my name though as Firstname Secondfirstname Middlename NMN Last name... I know NMN means no middle name, but I do have one and it's there listed. I just hope they don't think I have 3 first names..
  6. I'm following for this answer! I'm bringing a Canadian friend with me, and not importing my car (only keeping the car there for a few months) 👀
  7. Hello Everyone! I will be crossing in about 2 weeks from now, I was just looking up some info and read about a 220$ 'USCIS immigrant fee' ... Is this something I'm supposed to pay ahead of time? It mentioned needing an alien number which I don't think I have yet, do I? Did I already pay this before during my NVC stage or during the initial filing?
