When I filled out forms for the I-129 petition for the K-1 visa, I did leave some things blank rather than putting N/A or none, although not many. Everything went fine with that.

Now that I am preparing documents for the AOS and reading more resources here and elsewhere, I plan to put N/A and None almost everywhere unless the instructions specifically say to skip to the next section if it doesn't apply.

When in doubt, I try to follow the form instructions as closely as possible. This is from the I-485:

So for example, one of us doesn't have a middle name, so I put "N/A" wherever it asks for it (it doesn't require a numerical answer, so that's why I didn't put "None").

But in other instances, "None" versus "N/A" versus leaving it blank can be more ambiguous.

Take the sections asking information about the US citizen's A-number. Usually the prompt reads "A-Number (if any)". The "if any" part seems to imply that if there is none you could leave it blank. However, to be on the safe side I put "None" (the question does apply but I don't have an A-number; since it requires a numerical response, the answer is none). But, in sections that ask for information about derivative applicants, family members, etc. who do not exist, then I put "N/A" for the A-Number question (the person doesn't exist, so the question doesn't apply).

I am splitting hairs and I'm sure that people have gotten approvals without everyone filling out forms exactly the same way. My personal approach is to carefully review every blank on the form. However, I haven't submitted any of this yet - I am carefully putting things together in advance of our actual wedding, so I can afford to pore over details like this for now. It would be good to hear from people that have already gotten through the process.

Only if you didn't include a response to something that requires a response
