  1. We faced this same issue. We ended up selling our car in Canada and buying cars in the US once we moved. We determined it was the best route for us to take so that we didn’t have to pay the car off with our own money, we could avoid the hassle of importing/registering, and avoid the issue of the car being in KM when the US is miles. We owed quite a bit on the loan. Tried to go back to the dealer we bought it from and sell it back, but they were going to really rip us off. Selling back to the dealer meant we would only get enough money to pay back part of the loan, and would have to pay some out of pocket. So we posted the car on FB marketplace and found a buyer within a day. The buyer purchased from us with a cashiers check and we then used the money to pay off the loan. With it being such a high amount I thought the buyer would ask if we still had a loan on the car but they didn’t. If you sell your car in Canada, at least in the province we were in, there is no title. The buyer just takes the purchase agreement to the registry and transfers to their name. Nothing flags the car is still under lien unless the buyer pays for an advanced search which they usually don’t. It was still a hassle as it is with such things, but it all worked out for us for the best.

    Hi!

    Crossed POE: Dec 20, 2021

Received SSN: Jan 12, 2022 (It was issued a few days after I crossed, but I think the holidays delayed the process/delivery)

Received Green Card: Feb. 15, 2022

    Hope this helps!! :)

Where did you cross? My husband crossed on Nov 21 and still no sign of green card.

Does anyone have any recent experience on how long it takes to receive your SSN and green card once you have crossed the border and activated your Visa?

We received the SSN within 2 week, but are approaching the 90 days since green card fee payment/entry date and still no sign of green card. We’ve checked the green card website and it still only says they received the payment. I am curious to know how long it is taking for others as well. We are anxious to have it.

how did you check the DS260? I don't see a spot to check it at all.

Ok so from the main page go to IV Application on the top. Then view, then on the left hand side select social security number, it’s the last option in blue. Look for how you answered the second of the 2 questions.

I have no idea... I crossed on Oct 31/21 and am still waiting....

So we logged into CEAC and confirmed on our DS-260 that we checked off the box to have the SSN automatically issued. We then called a local office, which took a few tries at different times of the day, and got ahold of a real person who was able to search the database and tell us that the number was generated on 11/23. They were able to confirm this with name and birthday, didn’t ask for the A number. So now we are just waiting for it to come in the mail. You should look up and call a local office to check as well. We initially called the National line which was useless.

  6. Hi all,

My husband arrived in the US on 11/21, he activated his visa at the Sweetwater/Coutts land crossing. We know his green card will be arriving in the mail at some point, but we are unsure about his SSN. Is this something that is also going to be coming separately in the mail, or does he need to bring his stamped visa to a local SSN office and apply in person?

  7. Hi there,

thank you for all of the great detailed information. I had a particular question about the drivers license section you had posted. You mention you brought all your paperwork to the DMV and then had to write an exam and sign up for a road test. Were you not able to trade your Canadian drivers license for an American one?

When I moved to Canada I was able to trade my US DL in for a CAN DL. And I assumed my spouse would be able to do the same when he eventually moves down.

  8. My Canadian husband and I got married in 2015 and I moved to Canada that year with no US income in 2016-present. We were advised that we will need to present the past 3 years of my US tax returns (2016, 2017, 2018) none of which I have filed. The last year I filed was 2015 as that was the last year I had any US income. We have submitted our I-130 and was advised the tax returns will be needed for the NVC stage of the process even though I haven’t worked in the US during those years. I called HR Block in Calgary and they want $600 per year for filing US tax returns, which would be $1200. We think this is astronomical cost. Is there another way we can do this or any suggestions on a cheaper company? We do not have any dependents or assets together and I should qualify as exempt from paying any taxes for being out of the country more than 330 days of each year. I am hesitant to file on my own as I do not know if I am going as single or married as my husband never lived or worked in the US and doesn’t have a social.

    needing help and suggestions!!
