  1. I haven't posted on here in a while, and am not sure the best place to post this, but...

As part of the whole visa process (K1 for me), I know that the US citizen has to provide proof that they are willing and able to financially support the person they are sponsoring; I understand this, as the government does not want the visa applicant to draw welfare immediately upon entering the country, etc, and be a financial drain on the system.

My question is, would someone in my position (getting ready to send in my packet to remove conditions), be legally able to qualify for and collect disability, etc? I came to the US with the full intention of working and contributing financially, but unfortunately I have developed some medical issues that make it virtually impossible for me to work. Just something I've been thinking about lately... I guess same goes for social security upon reaching retirement age; since I (quite likely) have never paid into the system, am I able to collect?

Any opinions or recommendations on where I can look (online) or call to confirm this would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks!! :)

  2. Although I find it very interesting that cars manufactured for the US have the speedometer in Mph and Kph. As a matter of fact in my Toyota I can switch the odometer to Kilometers if I like but the numbers go up to fast. :)

    Wiz

ever since Canada went to the metric system, the speedometer has displayed both mph and kph regardless of whether the car was manufactured for the CDN or US markets - the only difference is which set of numbers is most prominent. as for your Toyota being able to display the odometer in either miles or km, that's a pretty new feature not all makes/models have it. my husband has an 06 Mustang that does not have this ability (to switch between miles and km on the odometer), but yet we rented a new PT Cruiser that was able to do this if i recall correctly...

Krikit - next time you go to the tag office, tell the lady that if miles and km are exactly the same as she claims, why do the numbers on the speedometer (for mph and kph) not match up? of course, she'll probably accuse you of putting in a phoney gauge cluster or something stupid like that... some people, there's just no reasoning with them

  3. The vaccination supplement is the I-693A. You could take your records to the doctor, and he'll copy them onto the form and sign and seal it.

if i get an RFE for this, i'll get it then - no sense spending money if i don't have to... or is it better to do this ahead of time and send it in regardless? i don't want to hold things up, but money is also tight right now with me not working and my EI not coming in yet...

  4. i'm finally going to be sending in all my paperwork for my AOS, EAD and AP and i just want to make sure i have everything i need. this is what's on my coversheet:

so, do i have everything needed?

  6. whereabouts in Kansas? i'm here in Wichita, sweating my a** off (by the way, hope you enjoy heat!). i am SO glad we have a/c; with temps well over 100F every day the past couple of weeks, i hope yours works well too. welcome!

  7. just wanting to confirm a few things with those of you who have been doing this for a little while...

i can receive EI payments up until my I-94 expires, but after that they will stop until i get my EAD approved, correct? if this is the case, how long did it take for your EI payments to start again after sending in proof of your EAD?

how long, after sending in all your paperwork, did it take for your EAD to be approved (sort of off topic here, but not really)?

  8. i know every state is different, but here in kansas

Did they make you pay State taxes?

nope, didn't have to pay any sales tax on the car (just the damn annual property tax they charge on every vehicle when renewing the registration) because i owned the car for several years prior to bringing it with me. if i had just purchased the car, i would have had to prove i paid sales tax where/when i purchased the car or they would have dinged me for that too.

daisylynn, i am keeping the canadian lienholder (my credit union) for now; until i establish some credit here in the US, any interest rate i get will be stupidly high. and yes, i just transfer money back to my canadian account - through paypal, it's the easiest, fastest and cheapest method - to pay the loan each month. as i mentioned before though, prior to moving i confirmed with my bank that this would be fine with them.

  9. i imported my car the end of june and had no hassles whatsoever at the border. most manufacturers can fax the compliance letter to you quickly, but be aware that some require two or more weeks to process the request. i have a mazda that i've owned since 2003 and was manufactured in japan, and the only way Mazda North America would accept a request for the letter was by me faxing in their form, and their processing time was minimum two weeks - and they do NOT do rush requests. i actually ended up having to call to find out what was going on after 4 weeks time because i hadn't received anything yet. annoying, but i got my letter emailed to me.

other paperwork i had on hand at the border, just to be on the safe side, was all my loan paperwork, my full insurance policy and pink card, registration AND a letter from my bank with my vehicle's info on it, indicating that they were aware that i was bringing the car into the states permanently. for those who have a lien against their vehicle, i would highly recommend getting a letter from the lien-holder just in case.

also, on a K1 visa (not sure about any others), you are allowed to import ONE vehicle duty-free into the US. most people are not aware of this. however, if you've only just purchased a brand new vehicle and intend to bring it down with you, that may be a different story, i'm not sure.

i know every state is different, but here in kansas i again brought all the above paperwork to the registry with me, including the import document that the border agent completed. you have to have this document in order to register your car. also, since the US uses 'titles' for their vehicle (the 'owner' of the vehicle has this document; if the car has a lien on it, then the lien-holder has the title until the lien is paid off at which time it is transferred to the registered owner of the car) and canada doesn't, i was worried what would happen since there was no way i could produce a title like they are used to seeing. the registration for your car in canada is, in essence, your title for it; since i still had a lien on my car it was a good thing i had a copy of my loan with me as they needed that information in order to create my registration and US title for it.

    hope this helps!

  10. i'll have to keep those links in mind; hopefully i'll be getting my first set of cards in the next week or so. what sucks though is i likely won't find out if my claim has been approved for another month or so :(

  11. i had my medical done in june back in canada prior to my interview and moving to the US as per the K1 requirements, and then gave the sealed envelope to the POE officer at the border like i was supposed to. after opening the envelope and reviewing the contents, he pointed out that the doctor had indicated that a 6-month follow-up was required.

first, i'm surprised the doctor - or his office - didn't indicate anything about this when i picked up my medical. i do have some medical issues, but they are completely under control and have been for years, not to mention they are no threat to anyone nor will they be financially draining to the system.

second, is this typical for someone who does have a past history of chronic health issues? also, do i have to set up the appointment for the medical on my own for about the 6-month mark (from my previous medical in june), or will USCIS notify me that i need to do this when the time comes?

i'm just a little confused as to how this all works, especially given that i'm applying for my AOS any day now...

    thx :)

  12. kind of on topic here...

i'm currently completing all the forms and gathering the supporting documentation for my AOS, EAD and AP. obviously, they want my vaccination records (i entered on a K1 too), but i handed over the entire package from my medical when i crossed the border so there's no way i can physically include this information since they *should* already have it (i'm crossing my fingers here). how do i indicate this in my application and/or on my cover sheet?

  13. i plan on filing for all three, the AOS, AP and EAD - hence the reason for waiting. i didn't want to get caught in their transition and find out that because of a delay, etc, at their end i would end up having to pay the higher fees for the AP and EAD instead of the one fee for all three.

guess i'll wait and see if there are any revised forms for the above next week (don't want to fill out and print off the wrong ones, just in case).

    thanks!

  14. this is my first of what will probably be many posts in this section...

i moved to the US from Canada on a K1 the beginning of this month, and my honey and i got married on july 14. we decided to wait with starting our adjustment of status for a couple reasons, the largest being the new fee schedule that comes into effect on the 30th.

i've briefly read through the guide here on the site, and plan to read more in depth and start filling out forms in the next few days. however, with the new schedule - and how they've lumped together the AOS, AP and EAD instead of filing them all separately - are there any changes in actually filing the documents, or can i still follow the guide? i have not checked the USCIS site yet, but i guess it stands to reason that there might also be new forms; does anyone know if this is the case?

since i am just starting out on this leg of my journey, if anyone can offer any suggestions, recommendations or tips on how to proceed, it would be greatly appreciated. :)

    thx!!

  15. i've read most of this thread previously, and now it's my turn to apply for the bloody ei... my concern is how soon after quitting my job do i have to apply before they outright don't consider the application?

also, does your ROE HAVE to say that you quit because of getting married? i don't have mine in hand yet (my sister is mailing it to me), but from what she's told me, it says that i quit because of moving. is this sufficient? or will i have to try and get an amended ROE from my employer?

  16. EI is employment insurance through Canada.

    http://www.hrsdc.gc.ca/en/ei/menu/eihome.shtml

If you are relocating due to marriage, you are eligible to receive employment insurance after you move to the U.S. K1s and CR-1/IR-1 visa holders are eligible. K3s are only eligible if they have an EAD. Canada requires that you are willing & able to work while you claim your benefits. K3s are not employment authorised so they are not "able" to work while in the U.S. until their EAD.

i haven't physically seen my ROE (my sister is supposed to have mailed it to me the other day), but she said that it indicated the reason for me quitting was due to moving. is this sufficient? or does it have to say due to marriage?

  17. sorry to take so long letting everyone know what happened... but i got it!!

the interview itself was only about 10 minutes, but i spent about 1.5 hours waiting - with no magazines, books, etc in the waiting room. it was a good thing i stayed the extra day though, and a heads up for anyone else with an interview in the afternoon: the visa will only be available for pickup the following afternoon.

so now i'm rushing to finish packing so we can leave saturday morning.
