  1. I normally have a mathematician in the house to assist me with these things, but he has gone to a Super Bowl party. I am flying solo this afternoon, assisted only by an Excel spreadsheet.
  2. I do! And he used to be the rep for the district my old district in Pasadena was redistricted into -- but he had been punted somewhere else before I got there. I do not claim to understand how any of that worked.
  3. It's a good question! I am moving in about 8 weeks, and I had to look up my new representative. I had never heard of him.
  4. It's not quite as simple as the headline though. (Data from linked poll here: https://www.monmouth.edu/polling-institute/reports/MonmouthPoll_US_020923/) Part of the seemingly greater unpopularity of McConnell (maybe even all of it, looking at the numbers) is that more people have not heard of Santos or do not have an opinion. The net difference between popularity and unpopularity amongst respondents who had heard of both of them and had an actual opinion is the same: 30%. I drilled a little further down and figured out the percentage of both McConnell and Santos' favorability amongst those who responded who had heard of the person in question, and actually had an opinion. When taken that way, it's still awful in terms of favorability, with McConnell getting about 30% and Santos about 22%. But unfavorability is then 70% for McConnell (net 40%) and 78% for Santos (net 56%). Sure, you can make statistics do lots of interesting things -- for instance, I just stood that headline on its, um, head. But having a better unfavorability rating than someone else doesn't mean you are more popular, or better thought of. To me this is a clickbait headline and okay, I clicked it and then I felt I had to do some math to try to prove myself right.
  5. I agree -- I totally understand wanting to mitigate the risks of shooting something like these objects (whatever they are) over populated areas, but what kinds of risks do they pose remaining aloft? I presume/hope that NORAD views them as low enough of a risk to let them continue on their path for a while, but whether we ever know is another question.
  6. Fourth flying object shot down: https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2023/feb/12/us-military-shoots-down-fourth-flying-object-over-north-american-airspace
  7. Ugh, I saw the most disgusting Chef Reactions video of someone coating a steak in peanut butter. It is horrifying.
  8. I will check out the body oil -- I am at Whole Foods every other day since I work pretty much next door to one. I am a sucker for the overpriced salad bar. I used to have this amazing Bourjois lipstick I bought in the UK years and years ago, the absolute perfect coral for someone with my coloring, and then when I went back to buy one... gone. Poof! I still think about it and it has been a decade at least. My favorite discontinued body product was the Benefit Bathina Body So Fine, which was a body balm with a little shimmer and this amazing, peachy-plummy-rose scent. So nice in the summer on bare legs with a sun dress. I ordered the Kate McLeod "stone" today and will do a review. This is a pretty useful overview: https://www.popsugar.com/beauty/kate-mcleod-daily-stone-solid-moisturizer-review-48986593 I wanted so much to like Buffet but it made me break out -- acne and rosacea twofer. 😕 Sad nope for me.
  9. https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2023/feb/03/george-santos-producer-spider-man-musical Just such a weird thing to lie about.
  10. I loooooove everything in the Clarins line of body moisturizers. Just perfect. However, I just bought a house and I am trying to trim costs a little where I can -- and that means not getting quarts of Clarins body moisturizer. I want to buy this: https://www.katemcleod.com/collections/body/products/grounding-stone?variant=31986715164730 Apparently a little goes a very long way, and I like the reusable packaging. Face serums are a must. I have two day ones I use right now -- my everyday is this one from Innisfree: https://us.innisfree.com/products/green-tea-hyaluronic-acid-serum Just a great all rounder, so light and calms my rosacea. When I need a little more, I go for the Ordinary's Niacinamide/Zinc serum mixed in with the green tea one: https://theordinary.com/en-us/niacinamide-10-zinc-1-serum-100436.html Nighttime I use the Ordinary Niacinamide/Zinc before my night cream.
  11. Beauty bump! I was at CVS yesterday with my husband to buy yet more Dayquil since I forgot to take mine before we left home. The one we go to regularly is a very large one, with an expanded makeup section with some indie beauty lines, so I decided to nose around for some body moisturizer as I am nearly out. For some reason, although I could find some good makeup (including my friend's company's makeup line, Kimchi Chic!) the bath and body products were lacking. My husband asked me if he could help, and I said, "Yes, I'm looking for some body moisturizer, but more luxe." "Luxe?" He looked very confused. "What does that mean in this particular context?" "Like, indulgent. Rich. Makes me feel like I'm having a special treat every time I use it. I don't think CVS is where I'm going to find it." "But they have so much [bleep] here!" (This was said with a sweep of his arms, as if all the bounty of America were available at this random CVS in Santa Monica.) "Ye-essss, but luxury beauty isn't their thing. I guess I was asking for too much to find something really special." He looked even more confused, then glanced at the shelf beside him and selected a tube of moisturizer, which he pushed in my hand. "What about this?" After I stopped laughing, I had to explain that Eucerin Eczema Relief is indeed a great product, but it is definitely not luxe.
  12. What happened today that made it impossible to post for about 4 or 5 hours? Just curious.
  13. I have paid for my own for quite a while now, thank you! My sister did "gift" me a login for HBOMax a couple of Christmases ago, which I do enjoy, but does seem like a cheap present really.
  14. George Santos news: https://www.cnbc.com/2023/01/31/rep-george-santos-says-he-wont-serve-on-house-committees-while-investigations-are-ongoing.html https://scri.siena.edu/2023/01/31/ny-3-voters-say-santos-should-resign-78-13-including-71-of-reps/
  15. They got him yesterday. https://www.nbclosangeles.com/news/local/suspect-arrested-tesla-road-rage-attack-glendale-2-freeway-los-angeles/3084391/ $5m+ bail. Good.
  16. Um, this isn't a thread about classified documents. It's about George Santos, and I was actually talking about potential violations of FEC rules. I'm just trying to keep on topic. Speaking of the FEC and Santos, it looks like he misrepresented to the FEC about who his treasurer was. https://www.pbs.org/newshour/politics/fec-wants-answers-on-rep-santos-chaotic-treasurer-switch So Datwyler couldn't have signed the filings because he wasn't treasurer, but the Santos camp made the filings anyway. Again, benefit of the doubt that they didn't know what they were doing, but https://www.foxnews.com/politics/fec-asked-hold-george-santos-probe-separate-doj-investigation
  17. Just because some potential violations are not followed up on doesn't mean we should never follow up on other potential violations. I think the problem here is that it seems like the violation is out in the open for everyone to see. Maybe he messed up again on the form, maybe not. He should be given the opportunity to correct it if he has.
  18. Some more news: https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2023/jan/25/george-santos-campaign-filing-personal-loans This is probably the most troublesome of all for him if it really did not come from him. Campaign finance violations are very different from saying you were a star volleyball athlete in college when you didn't even go to college in the first place.
  19. You know, I thought the same thing. But it does sound like the edits were made a long time ago, in 2011, well before Santos became well-known. There is active discussion on the Wikipedia Usertalk page for the article which goes into the topic a lot more: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User_talk:Anthonydevolder It's an open question. Who would create a weird, delusional profile of a young man who was (sorry) kind of a nobody at the time? I mean, it could be some rival drag artiste in Brazil at the time who wanted to make Santos/Devolder look dumb. Dunno. I guess time may tell us more.

  21. That George Santos is a natural born US citizen is one thing I actually DO believe about him!
  22. Yes, we're getting it through Costco. Our contractor/architect told us that was the way to go.
  23. We're going with an LG for the stove. Excellent reviews on the model -- the only real criticisms were that it was too expensive. Well, it was when the model first came to the market. Now several years on it's a good deal, with the price down about $600. Guess who manufactured our constantly breaking down washer and dryer in the place we're leaving? 😑 I'm on the no Samsung train too.
