Thanks again for the reply. This really does help a ton. In a way, the way our green card is now is 'correct', and when we do the N-400, we will just do a name change to take one of her 'middle names' as her first name since that's just her preference. I do not think this will cause any issues. We are thinking we will hit up a lawyer that deals with the Vietnamese community, and get his take on it as well. Do you know anyone who has gotten citizenship with their middle name as first? They didn't run into any issue?

Thank you for posting this. I wonder if I can find a Vietnamese-to-USA community that might have experience with this exact issue and what they did to rectify it. Cause I know we aren't the only ones who are facing this issue. Do we need to get her green card corrected before we do the N-400? I've heard conflicting information. Some say it MUST be corrected, and others say it won't be an issue. Do you have any thoughts? Have you filed for I-751 yet? Did you put her 'green card' name or her 'real name'?

I did just call them up. (wow did I just get lucky, I got in touch with an agent in 2 minutes.) They suggested to use the green card name.

Her Vietnamese passport says the name on her birth certificate. Besides, I really doubt that USCIS will approve the petition if the name is not "correct" anyway. I just need to know what "correct" is, in this context. The N-400 offers a name change opportunity, which she will take in an effort to "clean this up". There must be documentation provided in this process because otherwise others would not be able to take advantage of it either. It's impossible to clean up at this point. I've tried. There is zero avenue for getting this fixed. And I don't really care what her legal name is right now. We just need to know what to put on the form. (We will change her name in the N-400 to her preference anyway.) Would love to hear from anyone else if they have any advice on this.

So, you're saying we should ignore the instructions here, and put her green card name instead? This is not the answer I was expecting. Does anyone else have any input?

This question seems like it should be straight forward, but I wanted to check on something: If your birth certificate doesn't match the name on your green card, which name should you use? My wife is Vietnamese, and has four names. On her Vietnamese passport, her name is listed in reverse order: Surname MiddleTwo MiddleOne First But on her green card, her name is listed as MiddleTwo M Surname. (The M is an abbreviation of MiddleOne.) So I am guessing we should just do what the question says and enter in the birth certificate name. Given Name: First Middle Name: MiddleTwo MiddleOne (or should it be MiddleOne MiddleTwo)? Family Name: Surname But since in the USA, her legal name is actually now MiddleTwo M Surname, will there be an issue here? Legal name meaning it's the name on her green card, her SSN, et al, and as such her bank accounts, her employers, her tax records all have this name. I think I know the answer.: Just fill it out based on the birth certificate and USCIS deals with this often enough that it shouldn't be an issue. Just looking for confirmation to proceed with confidence.
