Counting Travel Days for N-400 Question
Thunderbolt replied to provec's topic in US Citizenship General Discussion
If you know the dates then yes. By the time they get to your application you'll be long back home. It just removes one question from the officer to ask you. -
I have no idea how it works, but since then we have direct deposit to joint account. The bank in question was Capital One. I would say check with your bank. Go to the branch and ask someone if you can deposit joint tax return check without having your wife on the account. Here is some answer found on google: "You need to ask your bank for specifics, most have more stringent rules when it comes to tax checks, but generally so long as both parties have endorsed it, it it can be deposited into an account that has at least one of those parties, though some require it into an account with both on them. Oct 29, 2023" And regarding the direct deposit straight from IRS.gov "Taxpayers should deposit refunds into U.S. bank accounts in their own name, their spouse's name or both. They should avoid making a deposit into accounts owned by others. Some banks require both spouses' names on the account to deposit a tax refund from a joint return."

How did you manage to deposit a check (return) in the account without your husband's name on it? When I did that the check didn't clear for 2-3 weeks and finally I went to the bank to check what's going on. They've told me that they can't deposit that check as it is with my and my wife's name. Deposited it to the other bank where we had joint account and the check cleared next day. I'm just thinking out loud. If your wife is in Mexico, and you don't have joint bank account, it may or may not cause problems for your returns.

Internation travel without U.S. Passport
Thunderbolt replied to John951's topic in US Citizenship General Discussion
You are 5 weeks out. Apply regular way and pay for expedited service. We've applied for my wife's passport with expedited fee middle of December, her passport came 2 weeks later. -
My wife got the letter few weeks before she became citizen. There was a line stating that she needs to respond within 7 or 14 days. We went online and followed the instructions. Selected NO to the questions of being US citizen. Had to put explanation in the box below. We put "LPR, not US citizen yet". After she became citizen we went online and registered her as a voter.

Also what about POE at Dulles airport? I assume that the final destination is on the east coast. If she takes ANA from Tokyo she will arrive around 9am at Dulles. That time immigration lines are the shortest. Probably 15 minutes max to clear. Pick up the bags and leave the customs area, put the bags for the next flight 100 feet away, clear security upstairs and go to the gate (via the train, bus or walking).

The only other option on SSC form is "Other Names Used". If your wife doesn't have drivers license with her new name then that's not a problem. If she has document issued by federal or state government put that name in that field. There is absolutely nothing false or misleading filling up the form with her maiden name.
-
Change the name now in all the documents except SS card. As Ontarkie said, it will be pain in the glutes to do it later. When you go to SSA use your wife's maiden name. Card with her updated name will come after you submit I 485 packet. There is not such a thing on social security application to say if you are either married or single and it never was there. Not in the 90s nor now.

Help - Do I/we owe state taxes?
Thunderbolt replied to PBabz's topic in Tax & Finances During US Immigration
Did your husband surrender VA car tags with the DMV when you guys left? If the car is still registered in Virginia, the state doesn't care that you guys live in UK now. They will keep sending you personal property tax letters and on top of that the penalty for not paying since 2022. I hope your husband canceled the plates before you left. -
Oath Ceremony Questions
Thunderbolt replied to futurecoloradogrl's topic in US Citizenship General Discussion
Congrats! Yes, you can bring guests to your ceremony. We were the first group of the day at the local office, and applicants were put in one line for the security and guests were put in the line after them. They made sure applicants went through before the guests. We had 40+ applicants and about 100 guests for our group. Bring the card that you have with you. If you don't have new one by the time your oath, don't worry about it. Everybody was wearing smart casual clothes, some people had suits. Nobody wore sundress as it was very cold here in Virginia Make appointment for your passport for the same day of your oath or for the next day. The lady at our post office was kind enough to make copies of the certificate. We've paid for expedited service and got the passport 2 weeks later and certificate week after. I think with the post office fees it was around $260. We brought our own picture for the passport. I think it was the oath letter, drivers license and green card. We had SS card with us too just in case. Everything took about 30 minutes. Don't stress about it -
Maybe I'm just different. Whenever I travel with my wife we always go through the US citizen/resident lines together (even though I have global entry for the past decade). I can't imagine separating from my wife, for what reason? The only place where they made us go separate was in South Korea airport. Every single person had to go separate expect the parents and kids. That was kind of awkward. Anyway. The point is that they should be honest when asked if traveling with someone else.
-
Your wife will not go and stand in line with you? I think she should. Also it looks very fishy if she goes to the other line and you go to the other. If they ask you or ask her if you/she travelling alone and you/she lies, you can be denied entry on the spot. Be honest if asked and go together with your wife. There is nothing wrong with going to your country to get married and go back to finish your work.

I did it in the main passport office in Washington DC in two days. I had intl travel coming up and my passport was running out of pages. I think I had only 1 side of the page blank and that can also create a lot of problems at some countries. I've made the appointment within 7 days of travel, went to the passport office in DC to drop off my old passport and to pay the fees. Picked it up the next day. I'm pretty sure you have the same options in NYC. Good luck.

In my opinion from what I've read in here. It would be 1 in a million for 2 single Colombian men to get any kind of visa to US, be it B or C visa. You are saying that the flights from Cali to PVR are expensive? Pretty much every day in May the price is around $400. For flights Cali to PTY to SFO to PVR to Cali is pretty much $1100 and up https://www.google.com/travel/flights/s/LETo2mwPmv7cXHCq9 Meet with them at PTY and arrive at PVR on the same flight. Problem solved.

K-1 visa (not permanent resident) or tourist
Thunderbolt replied to barcman's topic in Tourist Visas
Complicated for US to marry Thai national (or other nationals). Unless they live in Bangkok or Chang Mai then there is less inconvenience and 'paperwork' to do. -
Plan for your interview to be in February not June. My wife's N400 took 4 months from the time we applied to certificate in hand. The passport with the expedited fee took 2 weeks. If I were you, I wouldn't plan any trips outside of US for now. Vacations can wait. Finish your process and then enjoy the fruits

Oath ceremony schedule ETA
Thunderbolt replied to bramerica's topic in US Citizenship Case Filing and Progress Reports
My wife had interview on October 3rd and the letter for the interview came middle of November (about 6 weeks after the interview). I actually checked the online status first and saw it there. The letter came few days later. -
RFE for I-90
Thunderbolt replied to Olga88's topic in Adjustment of Status Case Filing and Progress Reports
I also wouldn't touch it if it was just a hyphen. As long as you have properly spelled first name and both last names. Now the worms are out of the can... -
For us it took 4 months and 2 days from the time we've sent the application to the oath ceremony.

citizenship application
Thunderbolt replied to Dejavudeji31's topic in US Citizenship General Discussion
As they've said above, 3 years - 90 days which would put you at November 11 2023. -
Failure to stop for a school bus in NY
Thunderbolt replied to Kudos's topic in Moving to the US and Your New Life In America
From the little reading that I've done about NYS and school buses - Looks like they can have cameras but not necessarily. In the worst case you can get $400 ticket and 5 points on your license (then your insurance will go up). If you don't get anything in the mail in the next 90 days you'll be fine. It will not have effect on your LPR status. It is waste of money Live and learn. Effective August 19, 2019, school districts and municipalities are authorized to use stop-arm cameras on school buses. As New York Vehicle and Traffic Law section 1174(c) explains, anyone who is convicted of a violation of the laws requiring motorists to stop for school buses could be fined. The fine for a fist conviction is a minimum of $250 and a maximum of $400. A motorist will also get five points on his or her driver’s license. Accumulating 11 points or more during a single 18-month period can result in a motorist having his or her license to drive suspended. Five points is a substantial number of points for a motorist. If a motorist commits a third offense of failing to stop for a school bus, however, he doesn’t even have to acquire 11 points on his record to lose his license. A third offense results in the mandatory revocation of the motorist’s license to drive a car. The record of unlawfully failing to stop for a school bus will also make it impossible to get any job that requires a clean driving record and will send auto insurance rates skyrocketing for most motorists who are convicted of this violation. -

fiance k-1 fiancé visa? Question need help
Thunderbolt replied to SLOP21's topic in K-1 Fiance(e) Visa Process & Procedures
Let's say K-1 is faster by 3 to 6 months. Then think about the headache and more cost after the fiancé arrives in US. AOS ROC If people can get married, why some of them still do K1?
