No slower than usual.   There are two parts to the background check---the criminal check, and the name check.  The criminal check is for arrests/convictions/charges.  The name check is for national security purposes, if you've ever been part of an FBI investigation (even as a person of interest), fraud checks, etc.

When the name check is conducted, they flip your name backwards, check out possible combinations of your name, check out prior legal names used, check out women's maiden name, check out similar names to yours, etc. to see if a "hit" occurs under any possible combination of your name as listed on your application.  Your request for a legal name change (especially the way you want to just reverse your first and middle names) does not really slow your application down.  If you have chosen a completely different last name or first name then it might have.

Thank you @Going through for explaining about the name change. I have had 2 friends who had their N400 application completed within 5 to 6 months of their application. For some reason, I feel like mine will take forever to get in line. The waiting game is just so painful.

  2. I have something to discuss. In my application, I filled out the change of name section because the order of my name needed to be corrected. So I changed my name from, for example, Gary Doe John to John Gary Doe. Will this name change make my application slower since they would need to do background check for the two names? Or would they just do the background check for the old name only? I checked my USCIS account and it still shows that the case has been received and they sent me a NOA. In reality, I already had my biometrics done earlier of this month. I have also checked from Houston's field office that they only do judicial naturalization ceremony. That means I do not even have to wait for the judicial naturalization ceremony like other offices where they have two separate type of ceremonies (judicial and administrative). Since I have not received any notification after my biometrics, I am getting anxious everyday, And now with all the flooding that happened recently in Houston, the area where USCIS office is located, it was under 16 feet water. Since I mailed in my application, I am just worried if my file got lost with all the recent flooding. So many possibilities are running through my anxious mind right now.

@bountyhunter hope you and your family are safe. It's a disaster here in Texas. We're bunking down but thankfully no tornado or flooding in my immediate area.

@SamBillz Thank you so much for checking in. We are doing fine. Thankfully my area did not flood. It has been raining non-stop for the past few days and I hope this ends soon. Things are pretty bad on other parts of Houston though.
