  1. That's so great! Glad to know everything worked out for you given the circumstances.
  2. Precisely, lol! Thanks for sharing that you also booked your passport appointment before the interview/oath happened. Great to know that individuals haven't been penalized just for making appointments!
  3. Totally! For clarity, the comment I made that I you've quoted was tongue in cheek - which was to say that making a passport appointment is not claiming false citizenship, but attempting to actually apply for a passport without being a citizen likely is.
  4. That's what I was thinking - knowing the backlogs and the time constraints, booking the appointment (and cancelling if not needed) seems practical. I could only see it being an issue if either a person was denied at the interview or hadn't taken the oath yet but then went and applied for the passport anyway 😅
  5. Thank you for sharing your experience! That lines up with what I was thinking: booking a passport appointment itself is nothing more than an attempt to secure a timeslot. I won't know if they ask about citizenship status until calling to book the appointment directly with the department of state (re: https://travel.state.gov/content/travel/en/passports/get-fast.html ) in which case I'd think there'd be no harm in trying? Especially while being honest if they do ask about citizenship at booking ("No I am not currently a citizen, my appointment is upcoming and I'm trying to be prepared").
  6. Hey Mike, Are you saying that you also scheduled a passport appointment ahead of taking the Oath of allegiance (and presumably attended the appointment after being naturalized + getting your certificate)?
  7. At first I thought you were exaggerating when you said that one might have to travel as far as Hawaii for an urgent passport appointment, but after reading through threads about people's passport experiences on reddit..you're right! Wow, I didn't even consider that people would fly cross country for passport appointments. What a busy time for travel!
  8. It is a good point! It might be an overly-cautious consideration, such that just booking an appointment is not the same thing as claiming to be a citizen (that claim is made at the appointment by signing the application in person) but I sense that there might be a difference between booking a passport appointment ahead of a scheduled oath ceremony (interview already passed) vs. booking in advance of the interview itself (outcome technically unknown). Definitely will consult a lawyer on this technicality just out of curiosity's sake at this point, but I'm very interested in being cautious and not risking anything!
  9. Ahhh interesting technicality -- by "eligible" I was of course only referring to entering the window of time that they allow you to begin calling for an appointment and not my citizenship status, but I understand what you're saying nonetheless. It doesn't seem that you have to disclose immigration status etc. over the phone to book the appointment (only have proof of travel), but if nothing else I can see how booking in advance could be perceived as presumptuous. In that case, going to the interview with the intention of not taking a same-day oath and hoping to be rebooked for after my return may be the one good plan of action, then!
  10. It seems I can call to book an urgent travel passport appointment once I'm 14 days away from my flight (per: https://travel.state.gov/content/travel/en/passports/get-fast.html ) So it appears that the best plan might be: 1. Start calling for an urgent passport appointment as soon as I'm eligible (July ~7) and try to book for between July 17-20 (post-interview, pre-travel). 2. If I successfully book an appointment, then I'm free to accept a same-day oath if offered at interview and will have a passport in hand before flying (exciting!) 3. If a same-day oath isn't offered as others have suggested might happen, I can cancel the urgent travel appointment and fly with my GC. If I don't successfully book an urgent travel appointment in advance, then at least I'll know that going into the interview and can then request to rebook the oath if offered same-day/can inform the IO of my plans. There are only 17 days between my interview date and when I return from Canada anyway, so whatever date I get re-booked for seems statistically in my favor based on other's experiences - although averages and odds might be out the window since I'll be dealing with a brand new office.
  11. Hey Usaph, how did this end up going for you? Did you successfully attend your interview and delay the oath until after your trip? I'm in a similar situation now and wondering if other people have had success with this route
  12. Daang, okay! That's super helpful! Given a previous responders comment about USCIS still having job postings up for this location it's beginning to seem more likely that oaths might be scheduled separately. (Same day oaths seem to happen at established, high-volume offices)
  13. Hey Alekezam! Did you end up successfully going this route after your interview? I'm in a similar situation with travel booked ~1 week for after my interview has been scheduled!
  14. Hey! How did your interview go, and did you end up successfully getting a passport in hand quickly afterwards? I'm in a similar situation now and wondering how it went for you!
  15. Hey nap23! What ended up happening with your interview/oath? Were you able to reschedule for a later date?
  16. If they can't make me do it the same day then that's a good sign! My flights to Canada are booked and very expensive to change (and it would take 37hrs to drive to where I'm going) so keeping my flights would be ideal. It's so hard to find more confirmation online as to whether rejecting a same-day oath is acceptable -- and if the officer would also cooperate in not booking the next oath for while I'm out of town. Most people would be thrilled to get the same-day oath, I'm sure!
  17. Oh wow! Didn't think of looking to see whether they were still hiring. Is that potentially it's own red flag -- as in, do I want the outcome of my Naturalization in the hands of new hires? 😅
  18. I just found out that my Naturalization interview is booked on July 12th at a new field office opening in Cranbury NJ. I also have a trip to Canada booked for 10 days on July 21st to see my parents (that I haven't seen in 1 year) and my sister who's flying over from Australia (that I haven't seen in 5 years). It seems like this might be too tight of a window to get a passport in time before travel (assuming I'm approved and take the oath on the same day) so I'm trying to figure out which action I can take to solve this issue that creates the least anxiety, with the smallest financial burden. What would you do in this circumstance? Current Considerations: • Rebook my travel dates further into the future; however, the airline told me that between change fee's and the difference in airfare it will cost me almost $1000 to move the trip. I'm a full time student, so this isn't ideal. (Refund/cancellation not available) • I could try requesting to reschedule my interview appointment for a later date. (Any date in the next 6 months would be better to me than missing this trip to see my family!) How likely is USCIS to honor a rescheduling request on the basis of imminent travel? • I could attend the interview as scheduled, hope for same-day oath, and try to get an Urgent Travel Passport appointment before I fly - which seems like it might be the riskiest/most stressful option. Lastly, it seems like many USCIS locations will allow you to take your oath on a later date if requested but I can't find much info about that as an option in New Jersey -- let alone at a field office that hasn't even opened yet. If anyone in New Jersey has ever requested the oath to be delayed/rescheduled with success I would be so interested in hearing about your experience! So given these circumstances - what would you do?
  19. Hey Mike! I just heard back from a local immigration attorney that "Cranbury is a new location that will open in July." Not sure how I feel about being one of the first people through a brand new office 🥴
  20. Found the answer to my own question: Seems that Cranbury is a new USCIS location that'll be opening for the first time in July (according to a local immigration attorney). Still curious to hear if anyone else gets booked for this location!
  21. Whoops, update! I live really close to Newark and so assumed I was going to be scheduled there, but for some reason my interview has been booked at 8 Cedar Brook Drive, Cranbury NJ (which also comes up on Google Maps as East Windsor). Has as anyone else here been scheduled at this location, or know someone who has? I can't find *any* information about it online, and Google Maps says it's in the same building as a doctors office and a pharmaceutical company 🤔
  22. Update: Sorry all, I live really close to Newark but for some reason my interview has been scheduled at 8 Cedar Brook Drive, Cranbury NJ (also comes up on Google Maps as East Windsor). I guess I'll be hopping off of this thread, unless - has anyone else here been scheduled at this location? 🤔
