So we had our interview today at the Dallas field office. Arrived at 8:15 for an 8:30 appointment and spent a good 10 minutes going through security. Everything out of pockets, belts and shoes off. Surprisingly they *do* allow cell phones in the building.
My wife and I (both applying for citizenship) had appointments scheduled for 8:30. She was called in on time, I was called in by a different interviewer about 15 minutes later.
My interviewer had done his homework. He asked me how my scientific research was going, and told me that he had had trouble finding my publications and citations on Google Scholar (I replied that I'd never searched for myself, but assured him I had many papers and citations). He seemed friendly enough but a little guarded at this point.
Before we really started, he asked if I had paperwork for the four traffic citations I had listed. I told him I had not, since they were all well under $500. He replied "then I guess we'll get to that later" which I found ominous.
He asked me my civics questions:
What is the supreme law of the land?
Who did America fight in the Second World War?
What is the capital of Texas?
Who vetoes laws?
Name one Native American tribe.
When do we celebrate Independence Day?
He then gave me a sentence to read - "Who is the Father of our Nation?" and then told me to write "George Washington was the first president" or something like that.
He then asked me all my main biographical details (date of birth, address, phone number etc.) and started on the list of yes/no questions. It was all reasonably relaxed, although he watched me very intently as I answered "No" to each question. The only humor came when he asked if I would "follow the orders of the President... whoever may be the President" to which he added that with the current election candidate hopefuls, that question was far more contentious for some people than it used to be, and he enjoyed watching people's reactions more now (!)
He asked if I traveled much (I said I did) and checked my passport stamps. When he saw that I had just returned from the UK he asked if I had the dates for that trip. When I told him that I had a printed sheet with my three most recent overseas trips listed in a table in their standard format he was VERY happy. Really, totally disproportionately happy. He told me that I was spoiling him by making his job so easy. When he added my latest sheet to my other supplemental travel table that I'd supplied with my application he was even more pleased to see that I had formatted that sheet their preferred way too. I pointed out that as an engineer, I just like to make spreadsheets and tables. From then on he was WAY more relaxed with me.
When we got to my traffic citations (I didn't think 4 in 13 years was too bad!) he was actually very relaxed. Commented that I was unlucky to get a speeding ticket in a National Park and laughed that the Park Ranger must have been really bored that day.
Once I'd signed all my paperwork he told me that he would check whether my wife had been given an Oath Ceremony appointment for that same day (which I hadn't expected to be an option). He left the room to check, and came back saying she had not, so we would have to wait for a ceremony appointment.
I don't recall him every saying explicitly that I had passed. We shook hands and he escorted me out.
My wife's experience was similar, although apparently her interviewer was unhappy that she didn't have her Social Security Card (since she couldn't remember her SSN off the top of her head) which is odd, since I wasn't asked for my SSN at any point. My wife was also asked more about my job and what it entailed than I was asked. I had created a table of recent travel for my wife too, and apparently her interviewer was really happy about that too. Top tip: if you travel between submitting your application and your interview, print a page showing your additional travel in THE SAME FORMAT as the application document, and they'll love you for it
And that was it. We were in and out in about 45 minutes. Now we wait for our Oath Ceremony!
