OAKLAND, Calif. -- Legendary former football coach John Beam died on Friday morning after he was shot on the Laney College campus in Oakland, California, on Thursday, the Oakland Police Department said, as authorities announced a suspect's arrest. Beam, featured in Netflix's "Last Chance U," is a football legend in the Bay Area and had coached the sport for over 40 years before becoming solely the school's athletic director last year. Police combed through surveillance footage, and at 3:15 a.m. Friday, a person matching the suspect's description was spotted at a Bay Area Rapid Transit station and was taken into custody, Oakland police said. The suspect -- 27-year-old Cedric Irving -- did know the coach, but "they did not have a relationship," police said. Irving played high school football in the Bay Area, but never played for Beam. Irving didn't attend Laney College or work at the college, but he went to campus "for a specific reason" and "has been known to loiter on or around the campus," police said. more at https://abc7.com/post/coach-john-beam-featured-netflixs-last-chance-shot-laney-college-suspect-large-officials/18154973/

The arrest of Eric Gillespie comes a month after the company secured a Bain Capital investment to expand its artificial intelligence tools to a wider landscape. A leader of a company gathering steam as a data and artificial intelligence provider to the Defense Department has been arrested for allegedly soliciting an underage girl for sex. Eric T. Gillespie, the founder and chairman of Govini, has been charged as part of a sting operation by the Pennsylvania attorney general’s office and the Lebanon County, Pennsylvania district attorney’s office. A law enforcement agent with the attorney general’s office posing as a preteen girl allegedly connected with Gillespie in an online chat. Gillespie then attempted to arrange a meeting with the girl, according to the attorney general's office. Gillespie was charged on Monday with four felony counts and is being held without bail in a Lebanon County jail. more at https://www.washingtontechnology.com/companies/2025/11/govini-founder-arrested-child-solicitation-charges/409468/

A key Atlantic current could be pushed to the brink of collapse within decades, supposedly ushering in a new ice age and dramatically raising sea levels, climate scientists have claimed in a controversial new study published in the journal Communications Earth & Environment. The apocalyptic predictions came as a result of a collaboration between researchers at the Institute of Oceanology of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (IOCAS) and the University of California, San Diego — weeks after one-time climate alarmist Bill Gates publicly downplayed the impact of temperature fluctuations on the planet. Per the new findings, the at-risk current in question is the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation or AMOC, a “conveyor belt of the ocean” that funnels warm water toward the ocean surface — from the tropics to the Northern Hemisphere. This current, which includes the Gulf Stream that runs from the Gulf of Mexico to the US East Coast and across the Atlantic to Europe, helps maintain the mild climate of Europe, the UK, and the US East Coast. The study stated that the source of this marine temperature regulator, the Greenland Ice sheet, is being thawed amid warming temperatures, causing meltwater runoff to leach into the North Atlantic — leading to stagnation. more at https://nypost.com/2025/11/12/science/gulf-stream-on-the-verge-of-collapse-scientists-warn/

People are gathering at ceremonies around the Great Lakes this weekend to honor the memories of the 29 crew members who died a half-century ago on Nov. 10, 1975, when the Edmund Fitzgerald — the largest freighter on the Lakes at the time — sank during a ferocious storm on Lake Superior. Fifty years later, the loss of a ship known as the “Titanic” of the Great Lakes remains one of the most famous shipwrecks in history. It’s buoyed in our memories by the haunting song “The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald” released by Gordon Lightfoot a year after the tragedy, and the lingering mystery around what exactly happened to cause the Fitzgerald to go down so quickly that the captain didn’t even issue a distress call. The anniversary of the tragedy is also a yearly reminder of the size, scale and power of Lake Superior and the Great Lakes, bodies of water the size of inland seas where the ‘Gales of November’ can whip up wind and waves of hurricane-like intensity. more at https://www.mprnews.org/story/2025/11/09/edmund-fitzgerald-shipwreck-legacy-continues-50-years-later
