Hi Everyone,
I was wondering the same thing too....Would there be a delay in updating the SSA about one's citizenship status after becoming a US Citizen after the oath ceremony, despite having the oath certificate on hand already?
Lol...A similar thing happened to me too, when I got my 2yr green card (and had the temporary I-551 stamp in my passport right after the interview, and then got my card a week later)....
Despite that, there was a 8 week delay to verify my immigration status and to finally get my SSN card....
On top of that, they didn't tell me what the reason behind the delay was, and it was not until I bugged them about it, drove about 20 miles to the nearest SSA office in the middle of a snowstorm, that they told me what the real reason was.....
Hope this doesn't happen to any of you when you get citizenship and have to update them about it...And hope that you all get your new citizenship status updated in time....
Lol...if it isn't one government agency...it's another with delays....blah...
By the way, should one update the SSA first about the new citizenship status, or go to other government agencies/services first (dmv/driver's license, passport, voting, etc.) for the update? What happens when a person updates their new citizenship status with the SSA? Do they have to fill out new forms? Besides the citizenship certificate, do they have to show other documents? Do they get a new card? Or do they keep the old card and just update it with "citizen" in the system?
Ant
They will simply have to update their systems, you dont need to get a new card.

I went to the social security office to update my status after my Oath ceremony and they told me to come back in two weeks because it’s not showing in their system yet. My question is, if in two weeks it will show in their system that I am a citizen why do I have to go back and tell them to update my status? Just to make me waste my PTO from work?
I am so happy to be done with the immigration that I don’t even want to complain tho
In my opinion, if you take your naturalization certificate with you, they should update your status in the computer instead of waiting for TWO WEEKS for the computer to update itself. I hate it when human beings in government offices act as if they are serving the computer instead of the computer serving them. And is it only my experience that this happens only in government offices?
Whenever anybody gives me such a reply in an office, I raise hell. And not just now, but from the day 1 of when I entered the U.S coz I hate incompetence and feel that I'd be only encouraging it if I accept it.
I actually had the Naturalization certificate with me!! The lady said that if she updates the status manually they will have to verify it with the immigration and that could take 2 months. go figure!

"Reentry Permit or Refugee Travel Document
Any Immigration Documents you may have"
Since I developed a bad case of paranoia after dealing with the USCIS for five years, I did bring my entire USCIS files in my big brief case along with us, but my wife just walked in with her oath letter and her green card that isn't green by the way. We had the N-445 filled out and thankfully, my wife didn't get any traffic tickets and had resorted to prostitution since her interview, it was my job to stay alive. But didn't sign it until she was in in front of an officer. They didn't really question her on her answers.
She didn't try to overthrow the government either, but we had a short discussion on how we could, we can't even get around our tax assessor or the building inspector let alone the US government armed with tons of nuclear laser guided weapons, but we do have access to some dried up sticks and stones.
We thought about bringing her child with us, but was informed she had turned 18, too bad, another couple of years wait and another 700 or so bucks. Wife really didn't want to surrender her green card, that cost us a small fortune and a lot of trips, and she only had it for seven weeks, asked if they could punch a hole in it or something and carrying a green card even to the bathroom became part of her life. But she got over that.
Ha, asked her yesterday if she had her green card to a short trip to the grocery store, but that was only because the day before, we were invited to a party with four other couples just starting the process, they wanted us there to share experiences, food was good. As typical, the immigrant wives were humble, but the USC husbands were pissed off, what is it with us USC husbands? Some of us had to fight for our freedom, those were the most pissed off. I rarely use that word, but here, it applies.
Had the same question about a reentry permit or a refugee document, what in the hell is that? We ain't got none, so screw it, see what happens. Brief case stayed in the car, green card and oath letter is all they wanted, I just had my camera but had to wait in a different line, they didn't ask anything of me, didn't even have to take my pants off, but had to drop my car keys in a basket along with my camera. But was told to keep my camera turned off until I got in the oath ceremony, just replied, Yes Sir, but wondered what if I took my 35 mm that doesn't even have an off switch on it. Missed out on some wonderful shots of the hallway and the men's restroom, ha, after drinking coffee and a four and a half hour trip, was just glad they had one.
This was hilarious

for my past applications it worked fine. For the citizenship one I never got an update and I have my Oath ceremony next month.
Good luck

Guess what, I just received the Oath letter in the mail! I am scheduled for June 18th

i had my citizenship interview in March, I was told from the IO that interviewed me that I would get a notification in the mail for the Oath in about a month or 2 but nothing yet... Should I make an Infopass? I wanted to avoid that because I will have to take off work and it is kinda far from me, would they give me a decent answer on the phone? or how long do I have to wait before I can make an inquiry on my case? I just dont want to drive all the way there just to be told we will let you know..............

My wife had her citizenship test today. We got there abut 20 minutes early and she was called at 9.05 by a lady. She was sworn in first and then the lady asked her some general questions like how she met her husband etc. (my wife thought she was judging her English capabilities). She then asked her to read an English sentence and then write "We pay taxes".
She asked her all the "Yes" questions from the form - The Oath requirement questions. She took 2008 and 2007 tax returns and made copies (We had filed N400 in January before filing 2008 taxes. I had mailed them 2007, 2006, 2005 taxes with the form but maybe she couldn't find the 2007 taxes in the file).
She then printed out a sheet with ten questions (she didn't let my wife see them). She would read them one by one and let my wife answer them. She stopped after 6 since my wife answered all 6 correctly.
1) What is the freedom of religion? (You can practice any religion, or not practice a religion)
2) How many US senators are there? (100)
3) When was the constitution written? (1787)
4) There are four amendments to the constitution about who can vote. Describe one of them. (Citizens 18 and older)
5) What ocean is on the East coast of the United States? (Atlantic)
6) Name one state that borders Canada. (New York + 12 others)
She was told she is passed and that she would get her oath letter in a few days. Then she was given 2 sheets, one saying she has passed, and the other had Oath Information.
She was done in 30 minutes and we were home before 10.00 Oh yes, no I was not in the interview room with her, I was in the waiting room.
Good Luck to all of you still waiting. I got lots of information from Visa Journey and felt better about how to do each step (from K1 to AOS to Removal to citizenship) by reading a lot of posts and taking some info and using it and not taking some info (which I felt was not very logical) - basically I had a comfort level that I used for each part of the step. And I think that VisaJourney is a great resource for this process and I have mentioned it and posted about it on other forums many many times. I hope that I was able to help a few people here and elsewhere from my experience and wish everyone the best. As the Oscar winning song goes - Jai Ho (from Slumdog millionaire - Jai Ho - Be Victorious!)
congrats! I had the exact same questions!!

My husband went to the interview with me and the IO even asked him a couple of questions (like date of marriage and how we met)
Good luck

Hello!
we got our notice for our oath on the friday before easter in the mail. Our interview was feb 23rd and the oath ceremony for us will be may 8th in Jefferson City. that is almost a month notice. we missed the april 8th date in k.c., which we were hoping for. so by the time he takes the oath there will be almost 3 months between interview and oath.
Hope this helps! Perhaps you will hear something soon. Good Luck!

Yeah if it is about a month notice, either I get something this week or I have to hope for a Oath in June!

I saw online that there is a Naturalization Ceremony on May 21st here at the court house in Kansas city and I was hoping that I would get a notice in the mail but as of today nothing yet. Do they notify long time ahead of the ceremony or I can hope to get the Oath letter one week before the Ceremony?
Share your experiences please!
ps: I had my interview March, 18th
Thanks!

Well I have a friend who was 9 months pregnant and was due on the day of her scheduled interview. She went to talk to an Immigration officer to explain the situation and she was able to get her interview the same day and she had the Oath the same afternoon. This was in California. I am sure this was an exeption due to the circumstances !!

I wore jeans and a nice shirt. My husband had on sweat pants and a sweat shirt but I didnt think they would let him in the interview room with me...

hi,
Firstly congrats!
I just sent my N-400 on 2/26 and i am waiting for the biometricks.
I have one question to everyone so i can be prepared when the interview comes.
Do I have to go prepared bringing more proof at the interview? Is it the same as going for the green card interview with my spouse? Does he have to be with me on my interview?
Thank you
I dont think your spouse is required to be there. I was surpriesed that they let my husband come in the interview room with me! In the interview letter it says bring the originals of the document you submitted and that's it but at the interview I was asked for additional proof of shared finances (I brought a recent bank statement and the tax return that we filed jointly 2weeks ago) but she didnt want to see any originals except for the baby birth certificate! If I were you I would bring additional proof just in case!

I took my naturalization interview in the morning and I wanted to share my experience with you guys. We arrived at the Kansas city Immigration Office at 7:10 am (my interview was scheduled at 7:30am). There were already some people waiting outside (the office was not open yet) we stood inline and 5 minutes later they let us in. We sit down in the lobby and put my interview letter in the interview box by the door. Every 5 minutes a different officer came out that door to retrieve the letters from the box… That made me extremely nervous! I had to wait about 30 minutes and I was called in, my husband was allowed in too (that surprised me!). We both had to swear in and the officer started to go through my application…she asked me if I still lived at the same address and if I still had the same phone numbers ect…Then she asked me some random questions from the application (are you a terrorist??!!) she went through my passport and checked all the stamps and compared them to the application. She asked my husband when did we get married and if he was a citizen since birth…Then she wanted to see additional proof of shared finances so I gave her a recent bank account statement showing both names, a phone bill with both names and our 2008 tax return(she made copies)…She also asked to see the birth certificate for my son (it was already included in my application) I asked her if she wanted to see the original of my marriage certificate and she said no. After that I had the English test, that was very easy I had to read this phrase: What do we pay to the government? And I had to write: We pay taxes.
Then the civics:
1. Name one state that borders Canada
2. What freedom of religion means
3. How many US senators?
4. When the constitution was written
5. What is the capital of the United Sates
6. When must all men register for selective service
She said congratulations, you passed! You will get a notice in the mail on when and where to go to take the Oath (she said it will be in about 2 months). She also said that when I apply for the passport they will take my Naturalization Certificate original and I will be without proof that I am a citizen until they send it back to me with the passport (she said about 3 weeks). Then she said you guys can go celebrate!
That’s all!!

On the Naturalization Guide it says it is reccomended that you bring to the Interview 2 additional passport pictures but in the interview letter the pictures are not mentioned. Do I really need these pictures?

that is the old test!

Hello everyone,
I have a question… I received my interview letter and it says bring originals of the documents you submitted, meaning I will have to bring my husbands birth certificate(US citizen) and marriage license, do they keep these documents or they just want to see them?
Do I need to bring any additional proof? Like pictures, my sons birth certificate or anything else?
Thanks for the advice!

This is ridiculus. I had my fingerprint taken last year for my removal of condition on my greencard with no proble. How can fingerprints change in one year? Is it too much for them to just open my file and use those prints??
oh well too much burocracy
