Overall, if you are certain you will not be outside the US for more than 12 months after entering and activating your LPR status, you should be fine. You can still apply for the re-entry permit if you want just in case this trip extends past 12 months, but you will either need to stay for the biometrics, or come back for them, and you would need to make arrangements for someone to get your mail and get the card to you once it arrives in the mail.
