Kamusta!

I'm Jamie from the Philippines. I'm a recent immigrant of the US, petitioned by my American husband. Our petition took a year to finish though we were approved pretty fast. I've only been here for 2 weeks, so far happy and adjusting well.

We live in a small city, pretty peaceful and quiet which has made it challenging for me to gain friends. I'm already too shy as it is and so I'm hoping I could gain a few from here. Would love to know about other people's experience with moving here.

To those reading this, I'd like to know(pick a question):

  • What was the thing that you had to adjust to the most?
  • What's the weirdest thing that you found here in America?
  • What's the thing you like the most?
  • What's the thing you dislike the most?
  • How did you eventually make friends?

I'd love to get to know people here.

Hi,

I've read several threads separately but most of them were made a few years back. I wanted to start a thread of my own just to check if anything has changed or maybe a new advice may be given.

I've only been in the U.S. for 2 weeks and have applied for several companies but have not heard from most of them, those that did come back to me just told me that they proceeded to hire somebody else.

I have an IT degree in the Philippines and have 7 years total professional experience mixed with Digital Marketing and Web Development. I know it's wrong but I expected to at least hear from someone at least for an interview by now as I assumed the demand for tech here in the US is high.

I've watched this video :

which helped me in realizing that I haven't patterned my resume to how the U.S. market reads it. It doesn't feel natural to me though. I was taught to not repeat words or they get boring to read.

However, I'd still like to validate with the people who have stayed here for years now.

My questions are:

  1. If you are someone from the same industry, did you experience the same thing? How long does it usually take?
  2. Do you have any tips with writing resumes that's ATS compatible?
  3. Aside from networking with people(it's pretty difficult for me to do so because of where I live), do you have any other tips?
  4. For those that eventually learned about ATS, did you get more calls after?
  5. Do experienced people need to get their diplomas certified somewhere?
  6. How else can I improve my credentials? Any certifications that you could recommend that wouldn't cost that much?

Any and all comments are very well appreciated!

Hi guys!

Just wanna ask anyone from Las Vegas area or Nevada in general. I just got my combo card and my desired married name is correct and all. I have my dad's last name as my middle name now and I took my husband's last name as my new last name.

However, when I went to SSA to change my maiden name to my married name, the person said I can't just drop my middle name and change it to my dad's last name. I need to petition it to court and that sort of things.

To site an example:

Birth name:

First name: Ann Lorraine

Middle name: Macariola

Last name: Medina

Married name: (In combo card and I-797's)

First name: Ann Lorraine

Middle name: Medina

Last name: Smith

So, the guy at the SSA did

First name: Ann Lorraine

Middle name: Macariola

Last name: Smith

Question:

1. How did you guys fixed all this? Any tips?

Thanks in advance guys!

hello, i just got a question real quick, i might have submitted the wrong form during the filing of my wife's adjust status..

so anyway, what happened was my 1st (since i got back in the united states) and recent tax return was not enough to cover the poverty guidelines for me to petition my wife. so i asked my brother and mom to be my joint sponsor which they filled the same form as i did which is the i-864.

and amount should have covered the poverty guidelines. but for some reason i received an RFE saying "based on the documents submitted with form i-864. affidavit of support, for the petitioning sponsor, the income did not meet 125% of the federal poverty guideline for the petitioning sponsor's household size"

so my question is..

my parents (dad and mom)

brother

sister and brother in law ( my sister's husband) and their 2 daughters

myself and my wife

lives in the same house. when i first submitted my wife's adjust of status. my brother and my mom were my co sponsor and they submitted the form i-864. i dont know if it was suppose to be the i-864a instead of i-864.

so now my sister told me that should also like to be my co sponsor and i wanted to know which form should my "mom", "brother" and "sister" submit?

it is the i-864a or i-864? and once my sister fill up the form, should her husband also submit the same form? since shes married to him? please i just need help and i want to make sure i submit the right form and meet the poverty guideline. thank you
