i have yet to move into my house..now getting ready to paint..hopefully in a few weeks..but when i do..i plan on planting asome roses..maybe some herbs and some veggies...how aobut you????????????//

well ... i sorted cheated this year!! we are doing saddle bag plants .... just strawberries & cherry tomatoes!! most of the work was already done ... i just bought soil and planted them in the bags ... just waiting for the blooms now!! i'll take some pics for ya! actually, my mom did most of the work ... i didn't want to get dirt under my fingernails!!

we also live in a townhouse ... but i just couldn't leave our area bare!!! flower-wise, i also bought some petunias for around the porch!! last year i planted hyacinths and tulips under the porch. they came up wonderfully this year .... tulips are close to blooming.

Good thread!! I could really use some tips...... when I get in the US I plan on improving the yard and planting a few things too. Roses and some vegetables were my first thought as well.....

We just planted a Magnolia, Lilac, Camellia and Rose tree in our back yard. I planted some perennials in our 4 patio planters and they're all doing just fine. We just hydro-seeded a few weeks ago, and the grass is coming up nicely!!!!! Our cobble-stone patio is finished, and we bought a brand new patio set and patio swing...... so we're just waiting for some warm weather now!!!! And waiting..... and waiting..... and waiting..... and waiting..... it's still like winter here in the Seattle area.

I had a green house when I was there last and will activate it when I come back: Tomatoes, three different kinds, outside red potatoes and cucumbers, lots of flowers, strawberries. I love gardening. I will put some pic's on here when my stuff arrives...

Well, there ain't much that will grow in New Mexico, but rumor has it that one of the native flowering plants attracts hummingbirds, so I may try some of that ...

last weekend, we dug up the corner by the entrance to the house, and planted lavender, and phlox for along the border. My wrist still hurts from doing that.

I also planted 5 different coloured miniature pansies in a flowerbox.

So far so good, they are still alive.

Since I'm still renting and can't really plant anything where I live I have big flower pots that I put flowers in every spring. I'm not sure what I will be stinking in them this year. I am planting some pepper plants and little tomato bushes in 5 gallon buckets. GEEZ.....I can't wait till I own a home again!

Roses are always nice ! So are herbs and veggies....

I've always had flower gardens.... mostly xeriscape and drought/heat-tolerant things that are hardy enough to stand the long South Texas summers. Most of my spring bulbs have already finished (the narcissus start in January !) I don't really deal with annuals too much, except for patio pots.... I like to stick things in the ground one time and then enjoy them year after year without working again lol. I have a lot of day lilies -- these are probably one of the best perennials for gardeners who don't like a lot of work. They haven't set buds yet -- probably in about 2 weeks. The wisteria already finished -- it was gorgeous this year. Let's see.... what's blooming right now.... Orange esperanza, red autumn sage, pink phlox, pink and purple verbena, purple calla lilies, various cosmos, yellow Iceland poppies, fern-leaf lavendar, pink and purple osteospernum (what IS its common name ??) blue plumbago, dwarf ruellias (Mexican petunia,) pink jasmine, orange crossvine, and pink ice plant. I am forgetting a few but it's dark outside now and I can't look to remind myself. Also my four pomegranates and a lemon tree are blooming away.

Mahmoud put in a vegetable garden this year... this is the first time I've tried to grow veggies, other than a few hot peppers in pots. We planted onions, tomatoes, bell peppers, zucchini squash, yellow squash, eggplant, cucumber, cauliflower, hot peppers, black eyed peas, spinach, various salad greens, and mint (barricaded so it won't take over everything.) Also some herbs -- lemon thyme, cilantro, marjoram and rosemary. So far we have harvested some spinach and salad greens, and one hot pepper ! The tomatoes and zucchini are setting lots of fruit, and the eggplant is flowering.

There are few things in life sweeter than enjoying your own beautiful garden. Good luck Bro Farmer Dean !

i would love to put a row of roses along the fence on the side of my house... that will have to wait til maybe next year...

we turned over a moderate patch of our backyard, and we will plant some veggies and herbs as soon as the threat of a chill is gone... end of this month, i suppose...

currently the azaleas and lilac are about to pop open... the tulips in the front are blooming... the hyacinth is almost gone now... and the daffodils were gorgeous for quite a while before going brown and being cut out

Living in an apartment, we don't really have a garden; but I plant lots of things on my oversized balcony, that is I'm planning to restart on that.

In addition to some herbs, I'm going to have tomatoes, peppers, leeks, garlic, and maybe some kohlrabi. I'm also thinking of getting some bonsai apple tree and maybe start a bonsai forrest. I love gardening, and I know that's one the things I'm truly going to miss once back in the US. I would grow roses if I had the space, but that'll have to wait.

Here in the UK I have a lovely garden - excellent rich black soil, lush green grass and practically anything I shove in the ground grows.

In NC tho..hello red clay-type soil!

Every time I go visit I look on the HUGE yard and despair. Seems it will needs about 50 tons of fertilizer, and mulch before it resembles anything like a good enough gardening arena. Plus I'll have to garden around the above ground pool, the trampoline and the jungle gym; and thats just to get a decent lawn.

Anyone live in NC or around there can give me some tips that won't break the bank?

Edit to add: there IS grass there in the yard - but its looks patchy and a bit scrubby - and I like a nice lush lawn. I know with kids tearing over it it will never be like a billiard table, and I dont WANT that either - but some nice grass would be a start I feel.
