My mother is married to an american and has her green card along with her SSN. She got married about 2 years ago. I on the other hand unfortunatly am still waiting for my green card. My green card status is on pending and i have a I-512-L. First i would like to know what has the immigration been doing? Is this normal that the process is taking this long? My mother got her green card right after she got married. If i do not get my green card by the end of the year we will have to get an attorney. I'm starting college next year and that SSN looks good right about now. I can't drive, i can't work, and soon if i don't have my green card i'll have to apply for a F1-Visa for college.

Ok moving on,

I was reading this website and if i understand this correctly its possible for none US citizen to apply for a SSN with one of the following?:

-Form I-551 (includes machine-readable immigrant visa with your unexpired foreign passport);

-I-94 with your unexpired foreign passport; or

-Work permit card (I-766 or I-688B).

Since i have an I-94 can i apply for a SSN while waiting for my green card? Can i also apply for a work permit with an I-94?

I need to drive, i need to work, i need to go to college. What is the immigration doing.

In order to apply for a SSN without a Greencard you need to have been approved for an EAD (work permit). Since you haven't already applied for work authorization then i'm afraid you can't get a SSN with just a I-94/unexpired foreign passport. You need both EAD (Work Permit card I-766) & I-94 with your unexpired passport.

You can either apply for an I-765 Employment Authorization Document or wait until your Greencard gets approved.

Good luck

I'm not sure about the kind of visa that i have. My step dad takes care of all the paper work and such so i don't really know that much. I do know that i have a I-512L which basicly says:

The named bearer of this authorization is an applicant for adjustment of status under the Act. The bearer departed the USA temporarily and intends to return to the USA to resume processing of the adjustment of status application. Presentation of the original of this document prior to <date> allows a customs and border protection (CBP) Inspector at a port-of-entry to parole the named bearer, whose photograph appears hereon, into the United States based upon urgent humanitarian reasons or significant public benefit. This authorization is valid for multiple applications for parole into the USA during the validity period noted above. Each parole period shall not exceed one year from the date of parole at the port-of-entry.

TRAVEL AUTHORIZATION: presentation of the original of this document authorizes a transportation line to accept the named bearer on board for travel to the USA without liability under section 273 of the immigration and nationality act for bringing an alien who does not has a visa.

And yes i am over 18.

You are looking at an Advance Parole document. Sounds like yours is an older version. That's not your visa - it's just a document that allows you to exit and re-enter the US.

How old were you when you arrived and how old are you now?

Could you be more specific? I don't understand what you mean when you said when i arrived. For my age i am 18 years old.

That document allows you to re-enter the USA after travel overseas. How old where you when you came to this country and what type of entry did you come on? Did your mother come on a K1 visa with you listed as a dependant etc? or was it on another type of visa?

I must of been about 13 years old when i came to america under a visa. I think i had my own visa and my mom had hers, i don't really remember. Atm i don't think i have a visa, but that shouldn't be a problem should it?

You will have to find out what visa you entered on. It should be in the passport. Without any of us knowing what you entered on we have no idea how to help you or point you to the right direction. If you are unable to get this information I sugggest a talk with a immigration attorney.

Well i looked in my passport but the only thing i could find was a I-94W stapled in my passport and another one that i have no idea about(no information). Also lots of information/stamps in my visa section. I think since the visa expired wouldn't it of been taken off from my passport? The only other thing i could think of is that i had an older passport and its in that one, i'll have to take a look at that.

I have another question, is it possible to check for status on my green card? If so what are the possible ways of doing that.

Hey i have a question, in my passport i have this thing that says NEW SEC.245 9-2-2004 I-485 pending. That was a while back i remember going to the immigration in newark and being interviewed or something. What is this sec.245 thing? Sorry for asking all these questions but all this time my parents were taking care of the paperwork and things related to the immigration. I'm 18 and i should probably know wth is going on XD
