...how are you planning on communicating whilst living together in the US? I'm not trying to be snarky here, just very curious.

eta: or how have you dealt with it if your so is already here?

We used an electronic translator. Type a sentence in English and speaks in Mandarin or Cantonese and vice versa. Also can write in Pinyin. Was a great help while she took ESL classes

I don't understand how you can fall in love in the first place, if you don't speak the same language.

It's key for a lot more than just that.

Yea, was too busy thinking about some threads I had seen about communication from the embassy's point of view and didn't pay attention to what Lisa was asking. Duh :help:

Some people have have trouble understanding my wife. I have never. One of the reasons she loves me (she has said).

"The fact that we are here today to debate raising America’s debt limit is a sign of leadership failure. It is a sign that the U.S. Government can’t pay its own bills. It is a sign that we now depend on ongoing financial assistance from foreign countries to finance our Government’s reckless fiscal policies."

Love at first sight? I also feel I have to be able to talk and communicate, otherwise I would have felt I could fall for someone or believe they are in love with me.

It's hard enough for me to have deeper conversations in Mandarin. Also, I'm a pretty funny guy at times and love teasing my girl, making jokes, and making people laugh and it is 10x harder not using English, but I still manage to make her laugh a few times each time we talk, so that was a relief.

My fiance usually is the translator for his friends that don't speak English. I told him he should charge by the hour. Work is hard to find and he's working hard translating for his friends.

Filed: Country: Belarus
Timeline

I am the American born US citizen and my wife is the foreigner from Belarus. However, my wife was an English teacher for many years in Belarus and came to the USA speaking English at a high skill level.

My mom's parents immigrated from Byelorussia (Belarus) and I have lots of relatives in Belarus and Russia. Some of them speak little or no English. My Russian language skill level is very low.

So my wife often translates for me so I can keep in touch with my relatives and fill them in on the latest news. My wife talks to my relatives in Belarus often.

Staying on topic...I couldn't imagine establishing a relationship with someone I couldn't communicate with. There are lots of pretty women in Belarus, but it was the communication with my wife that brought us together.

"Credibility in immigration policy can be summed up in one sentence: Those who should get in, get in; those who should be kept out, are kept out; and those who should not be here will be required to leave."

"...for the system to be credible, people actually have to be deported at the end of the process."

US Congresswoman Barbara Jordan (D-TX)

Testimony to the House Immigration Subcommittee, February 24, 1995
