i want to make abdou's arrival extra special in every way i can when he arrives friday night. although i know he's probably going to be sooooooooo tired from traveling for almost 20 hours!

what little things did you do for your SO for the first few days of their arrival?

or what little things do you plan to do for your SO if they aren't here yet? :)

so far i've made a mix cd to play in the hour long car ride home from the airport

i'll bring a bottle of water for the car (maybe a little snack for the car)

flowers from the garden in vases all over the house

i'm going to buy a few items from the store i know he likes (a few drinks, fruit, snacks)

i'll probably cook a few things to leave in the fridge he can have if he's hungry the first night.

i don't want to over do it...but i also want to do more creative surprises i seem to be going blank on! ideas please!? i'm so used to being the guest that becoming a host (at least at first) makes me draw a blank!

also what first foods did you introduce your SO to when they arrived?

My dad and little brother came with me to pick him up at JFK. We went out for sushi. :)

Then we dropped them off in CT and continued on to Boston. It was a trip for Wadi to see me driving, since we didn't have a car in Italy and always took public transportation.

jenn, how did wadi like sushi his first time? was he a seafood eater in morocco/italy? abdou LOVES seafood and i'm so excited for him to try sushi. i'm hoping he'll like it because i love it so much! but its a gamble since its so different from cooked moroccan fish. lol

Oh, Wadi *loves* sushi. We had had it quite a few times in Italy, but it was very expensive there, and not nearly as good as what you can get around here. He will eat anything that once lived in the sea, raw or cooked!

Only thing is he can't stand wasabi, the wimp.

I made lasagna the second day he was here. We ate it for 3 days (I don't know how to make a little lasagna). :dead: I will not be cooking that again any time soon.

For his first night home I made very traditional Egyptian food (your favorite, molokhiya with chicken and rice). It was something I could make fast and easy before hand and warm up later. He was surprised and happy.

Buying some "comfort" foods for his first days is a good idea. That's what I did. I bought enough for a few days so we wouldn't have to go out. I knew he'd be tired for a couple days. Plus we had a lot of catching up to do. ;)

Other than that I had shaving stuff, deodorant, toothbrush and new cologne waiting for him. I didn't go nuts and I'm glad I didn't. I was gonna buy him a couple new shirts, underwear, socks, etc. but I didn't because I didn't want to take the fun of shopping away from him. That gave us an excuse to go to the mall. :)

yesterday he asked me in a shy voice, "can we go shopping when i get there?" so i asked him for what and he said for, "men's stuff: toothbrush, shaving, etc" i'm not sure if i'll buy it for him or we'll go together. i originally thought i'd buy it for him but then i thought he might like to pick the smells, etc. i have no clue what is a good male deodorant! haha

he was wiped out tired the first few days, both from travelling and also I think the family goodbyes are very emotionally draining. We went to a couple of movies and ate out at a seafood place and otherwise just hung out, I think I took him on a tour of the city and stuff.. oh and a trip to the Super Target to stock up on man toiletries and the like. He was VERY impressed with target.

I definitely can't post here what Hicham and I have talked about what we would do as soon as he got home!:blush:

Could you get a friend or someone to light a bunch of candles for you a few minutes before you are supposed to arrive? I actually wouldn't do too much because I bet it's going to be alot for him to take it all in, you know?

I would maybe plan stuff for him to do over a few days time. You don't want to overwhelm him too much...AND...it is really going to be about the two of you being together and just taking your time.

Moh is such a guy...he couldn't care less which brand of deodorant, toothpaste, etc. he uses. That's why I just bought it for him. Maybe ask Abdou if he'd like you to buy it or if he'd like to be part of the decision making. I asked Moh and he didn't care either way.

I definitely think you should let Abdou experience all this stuff for himself. I remember Hicham telling me that his first time coming to America, he thought that every place looked like New York City because that's all he had ever really seen on TV. He did fly into NY, but once he got to his school in NC, he was really shocked at how different everything was.
