We just got our CR1 visa and the husband just arrived in California.

So he already has an interview, but since his green card won't arrive for "6 months" according to the POE officer, and the SSN not for 3 weeks, can he work?

Thanks for the tips!

hi

it shouldnt take as long as 6 months to receive the greencard and did you check off on the paperwork for them to organise the SSN ..if so..you can go to the SS office to get a temporary SSN receipt until the card arrives..

found this in the CR1-IR-1 guides did this happen at the airport..??

If your relative is your wife or husband and you have been married for less then 2 years at the time of his/her arrival at a port of entry, then he/she will receive a temporary I-551 Stamp and then later a Green Card by mail good for only 2 years. Ninety days before the green card expires you will have to file an I-751 form to remove it's conditional status.

the above stamp allows the permanent resident to work...

good luck

The I-551 stamp in passport makes the passport a temp green-card, that and a SSN allows work, most employers want the SSN so that they can report income tax on work.

He went to the social security office today and they refused to do anything for 6 weeks. They repeatedly told him that they could not do anything with his case until 6 weeks had passed and the SS card had not arrived. Guess we will just wait. Hopefully the company will hire him with out the SSN and we'll be ok. And yes we checked the box applying for the SSN in the paperwork.

The SSA office wont do anything until USCIS updates the SAVE system with record of entry to the country, 2-4 weeks after entry.

Ditto. He can still interview and tell potential employers about the situation - if they are interested in hiring him they will wait - unless they are mean people, case in which I will personally go down there and.... oh! wait! I can't, no visa for me yet ;) . Good luck on the job hunt and stay calm - the worst is over!!!!

girlafraid7,

Yes. He will need to show that he has applied for the necessary documentation within 3 days of being hired and the documentation itself within 90 days, both of which should be easy enough to do.

OK so the employer agreed to accept the SSN when it comes in. She said just make sure you bring your green card. Hmm since that hasn't arrived yet either, I assume the Passport with CR1 visa and CR1 stamp authorizing the visa is ok... Does the stamp have to say 551...I think his says CR1.

He starts tomorrow so I hope it goes well!

Thanks as always for the support!
