We will have AOS interview on April 23. I also applied for EAD along with my AOS. They received my package around the first week of Febuary so according to the timeline, I will not receive my EAD until May. My question is when will I know the final decision of the interview? Will they tell me that my case is approved right away or I will have to wait for a while after the interview? What if I get approved before I receive my EAD, can I start to apply for jobs? Thanks!

There is no set answer, unfortunately. You may get approved at interview but then not get the card for months. You can apply now but can't work until you get either EAD or your GC.

Wait, if they get approved at the interview and get a stamp, he is allowed to start working right away.

yes, but it is unusual to get the stamp. They usually tell people that the green card will only take 3-4 weeks and that it is not needed.

You could alway plead mercy and hope.

If it happens to my wife, I will ask for a stamp right away so we can travel. We're dying to go to Brazil and as soon as her AOS is approved we're leaving within days. I don't see why they wouldn't give her one.

I hope your tickets are changeable. If you don't get the stamp, what will you do? Even with an approval by mail it may take weeks to get the GC.

What about a SSN? I assume most employers require one.

We have submitted our documents yet, so we have no idea when the interview is going to be, but I wont buy any tickets until we can travel for sure, but I will ask for one if it is approved and I will get the tickets then.

And tracy, if he already has a social security he can start working immediately, if he doesnt he can go and apply for one with the stamp.

You can start work without one, but you're supposed to get one quickly. This happens all the time at my work, because we get a lot of J-1 visitors. They start work the day they arrive, but usually it takes them a few weeks to get a SS card.

If you can produce a work authorization document and evidence of having applied for a social security number, an employer can legally hire you.

Actually if you look at the I-9 there is no requirement for proof of having applied for a SSN to start work. The only place SSN is mentioned is where they ask for the number, and as proof of work authorisation (if you have one of those cards without the "Only valid for work with DHS authorisation").

That's true, but Social Security has guidance to employers that requiring production of the card is not necessary as long as the new hire can prove the card has been ordered and agrees to produce it within 90 days.
