Filing 2006 Canadian Income Taxes

I'm hope someone has already done this & can give me a little guidance...

I'm getting ready to file my 2006 taxes. Since I'm married, do I file as married or single? My husband is the USC, I'm the Canadian. He's obviously never worked in Canada, so has no Canadian income. I'm just confused because my paperwork from the Gov't is in my Maiden name, but my T4's from my employer are in my married name.

What to do?

I tried googling it and spent about an hour looking around and found nothing.. I figured someone here has probably already filed taxes and knows.

you can file as either single, depending *when* you got married, or as "separated"

I filed my last return in Canada as "separated" and did not need to declare my husband's US income whatsoever. The lady who did mine at H&R Block was very knowledgable about what to do with it. Unlike the people I've met here at H&R Block in the US who really had no clue what they were supposed to do with our taxes here.

I called up revenue Canada, and they were very helpful. I filed as married, but of course my American wife wasnt able to claim any benefits!! For her SIN, I just wrote in USA citizen, and for her income I roughly converted it into Cdn $$. I only did that because I was using a computer software program, and didnt want it to calculate any benefits for her. As well I attached a short letter explaining the situation!

Can you file married but separate? Like just continue to file as if you were single but check the "married" box and not claim any additional benefit?

That's what we did for Michael - there is actually a box to check for living apart for the entire year.

So I can file as married, but living seperately, his US salary exceeds mine, so if I claim his salary isn't it just going to make it that I owe more money or will his salary not even come into the picture ?

That's what we did for Michael - there is actually a box to check for living apart for the entire year.

Perhaps I should look at my tax form and actually do my taxes!

I don't think you need to claim his salary. I won't be claiming my husband's (the USC) and he won't be claiming mine.

One doesnt have to claim the USA citizen salary!! I just did that in mine to fool the computer program

if you file as separated (which is the Canadian equiv. of the US "married filing separate" just worded diffrently) then you don't have to claim the US half of the income. Don't even have to put it on there at all.

Really? Filing as separated means married filing separate in the US??? I thought that means u're separated (like u're in the middle of a divorce)??????

Can any tax expert shed some light in this area?

Hi everyone I too have this problem, though mines a little different i have been claiming one child as equivilent to spouse and 1 child as a dependent,but now i have a husband.My sister works for revenue canada and is checking this today for all of us.If you Efile she says certain parts are keyed in and will bounce out of system for clarification so taxes will take longer. I will post tonight with the answers.I have all my stuff ready to go to rainy vancouver on weds interview is 10 am march8th yippee.

If your spouse is not resident in Canada, you do not include their income on the Canada T1. For their SIN you put US Citizen and include a statement in your return that your spouse is not a resident of Canada.

she checked and yes you can do that and if you have situation like mine you fill out schedule 5.good luck all i'm having mine efiled tomorrow.
