RFE income TaxTranscript or just copies are OK

I got an RFE asking for:

"Federal income tax returns for the most recent tax year or certified Internal Revenue Services (IRS) copies."

Before we filed our 2006 tax (1040) we made copies in case we needed them. My question is can we send a copy of the tax return that we filed or do we need to get a certified copy or Tax Transcripts from the IRS?

Is there anyone that just sent a copy of their tax return without a problem? We have not yet received our Income Tax Refund so that means getting a transcript would require us to first wait for the actual refund to arrive (so the IRS will have processed the return and have a record of it) and then contacting the IRS to have them send us a transcript?

Any help or advice is appreciated.

Xerox copies are acceptable, you DO NOT have to have them certified.

The U.S. Govt knows you will keep originals, and know you will seb=nd copies, and as phrased in their instructions, they will only expect originals, or certified copies if specifically requested.

copies are fine, just make sure if you send copies and not transcripts that you also include all W2s and any 1099s. we originally sent just copies but forgot to include a 1099 and had an rfe for it-my husband is self-employed and does not get a w2 and very few 1099s. so we ended up submitting the transcripts just to be on the safe side. so our problem wasn't the fact that we sent a copy-we just had some evidence missing that only the transcript could make up for.
