Server Load too High

It seems that every time I go to use Active Topics I now get the message that the server load is too high... it used to only happen between 11:30am EST and 12:30pm EST now it seems to be most of the time...

I am also getting the same message. First noticed it last week while doing a Search. Agreed that it's been bad today as well, grrrrrr.

I implemented the new feature to prevent load spikes. Basically this is how it works: In the past what happened was that if someone did a search that took too long the server load would spike and slow the entire server down. When the server was slow another person might do a search or even the first person would hit the back button and try the same search (give up on the first one that was still being processed). This would cause a catastrophic load increase and the site would be unresponsive until things cleared. Meanwhile while this was happening people just reading the forums would not be able to use the site. To prevent this what I did was when the 1, 5, and 15 minute server loads exceed a threshold the search feature would go offline. This would prevent the catastrophic build up in server load spike because people could not "pound" the search feature when a CPU intensive process was running. The thought is that even though searching is offline at peak load times and when "big searches" are going on, the site would remain usable by people. From the server logs I can see that the massive spikes that completely made the site unresponsive for 20 minutes or more some days is no longer an issue. I have noticed that during the 10am - 12pm EST time frame there are periods where the search is offline. I can further tweak the load limit to help. Todays server load showed a lot of time (more than normal) above the threshold keeping the search offline.

There is a My Assistant Tab that has new posts listed even when server loads are high.

I have updated / replaced the old Active Topics and New Posts features with a beta program I demo'd on the forums last year (you may remember it). The new feature does not load the forum down and gives the same information (and I think in a better format hopefully). The information for Today's Active Topics as well as the 'New Topics' is updated every 60 seconds so the list is never older than that (and often newer depending on when you check it).

That is because I removed that post per the request of the original poster. I need to fix the system to not show the post if it is in the recycling bin so to speak .

Also, is there no way to skip to the first unviewed post like there was before?
