British passport renewal(from here in the US)

I'm hoping that this is the right forum for this question(I guess it is as I'm trying to renew my British passport through the UK embassy here in the States).

Ok, so here's my deal....I need to renew my UK Passport as it expires in July(well at least I think I need to renew it now). Reason I need to renew it is that I am traveling back to the UK in March for vacation(first time back since moving here)and I heard somewhere that you need at least 6 months left on your passport to travel from UK to the USA/vice versa. Does anyone know if this is correct?

If I do need to get my passport renewed, I know I can do this from the States and mail the application to Washington, DC, but I have to get my passport photos and I don't know where to get them. I need UK-sized passport photos(which as you Brits know is a different size to the US ones). I live in Toledo, OH and don't even know where to start! I thought about contacting the British Embassy, but I figured that I'd ask on here first to see if anyone might know the answers. I know you guys are all pretty helpful on here!

You should find all you need to know here. I renewed mine last year and it took less than two weeks for them to get the new one to me. I was amazed at how quick it was.

Thanks Girona. Did you have to get passport photos or a countersignature? That's the bit that I'm confused about. The form C1 says it requires a countersignature on it and I saw somewhere on the BritanUSA website that you need 2 passport photos. Am I right?

When in doubt, use the multipurpose 2x2 (5 cm x 5 cm) size.

Thanks for link CherryXS However, whilst I agree that it should be pinned, it still doesn't really answer the question about the photos(I do appreciate your help though!) As far as I was aware the 2 x 2 isn't accepted as a UK size passport photo. I guess I should e-mail the embassy.....

Martin had to get his UK passport renewed in the US a year ago and we sent in normal US passport size photos. We got his new passport with no problems.

Thanks for this reply Amie! I'm surprised that the British Embassy allowed the different size photos. I guess they do things differently over here. I think I'll go ahead and get US photos. I'm definately NOT going to be phoning the embassy at $2.49 a minute, what a rip-off!!!

no problem! well i guess they are more lenient since they process it in washington dc and not england. we got it back in like two or three weeks too if i remember correctly.

The web site has a very detailed document describing the size and composition of the photo.

And it is amazing what a pair of scissors can do for re-sizing.

PS 2 inches vs 5cm, not sure that I could tell a 0.8mm difference.

I sent standard us size passport photo's and had them countersigned by my lawyer... she has only known me for 18 months at that time but I did phone and check with the embassy and was told that as long as the person is a profesional person and they are a US citizen or UK citizen there would be no problem...

I got my new passport back within 2 weeks...

Thanks everyone for your advice. Looks like I'll go ahead and get US passport sized photos then. I already know someone who can countersign, so that's good.
