Hi all,

I am going to buy a ticket for my girl in Rio. Since the ticket price is cheaper down there, I am going to wire her some money.

What's the quickest, safest, most convenient, cheapest way to wire money to Rio? Anyone done it before?

Thank you all!

MoneyGram is cheaper than Western Union if an office is available to her. I provided my fiancee with an ATM card and that is by far the cheapest @ about $1.00 per withdrawal.......

YMMV

The bank where I have an account here (Itau) accepts MoneyGrams, but I don't know if they all do. Ask her to go to hers and inquire about it.

If you decide to send her an ATM card, remember that ATM machines here have a maximum amount we can cash per day, so she might need to do more than one withdrawn.

You can use Western Union if the Brazilian has a Banco do Brasil account.

actually she doesnt need to have an account in the Banco do Brasil... all she needs to do is get there with her id, the transfer number, your name and the amount you sent here... I used to do it all the time  and the money is available 20 minutes after you send it

I don't have an answer for this (never wired money), but I'm wondering how you got a cheaper ticket in Rio than from here? What airline? Sorry.

You know you're right - you don't need an account at Banco do Brasil - sorry :P

I've never seen it received in 20 minutes - only the next day but I'm sure it can happen - maybe not as much in the Amazon.

It is a known fact that itineraries with flights that originate outside the US and are ticketed by an agent outside of the US are cheaper. We pay a premium!

A case in point, I was in BsAs and needed to purchase a day of departure ticket back home. The best any US based agent or website could do for me was RT $1400. I went to a local agent in downtown BsAs and got the exact same itinerary for RT $850 for a flight leaving in just 8 hrs time..... Is this an isolated case? I have been told it is not.

YMMV

I always find cheaper tickets online....

And yeah... IKOBO works great, I even started a thread about it once I think. But it takes a few days for her to get the card though. Since you asked for the fastest way, I'd go with Western Union. One time, I was at bank and had David on the phone with me... he sent me the money as we talked and 10 minutes later I got the money.

Hey Guys,

I just found out that TAM has pretty good price. For example, from GIG to JFK is 990 buck or around R2180. It is the cheapest so far. But the catch is, you have to buy from www.tam.com.br and you can only use brazilian issued credit card. I know it is stupid that's why I am wiring the money to my girl so she can charge on her credit card.

Well, MOneygram for some reason doesn't work sending money from California to another country.

My love made a wire transfer- he just need my bank infos and one number (a kind of international code) that is necessary to have. (you get this info in the bank's homesite).

He made it and 1 day ago it was in my account.

My bank is Itaú, by the way...

Good vibes!

Fruto: :time: Thanks!
