Medical Exam Process in Frankfurt

Hi Everyone,

David had his medical in Frankfurt this morning and had no problems. He didn’t trust having his medical done on the same day as his interview, which is an option. He does need to update his tetanus which he will do tomorrow, and the results will be faxed to the Panel Physician’s office. All in all, he described it as “friendly, informal, and thorough”. It did take three hours to complete. What follows are the details regarding his experience… take them with a grain of salt if you choose to read further, as everyone’s experience may be a little difference, depending upon their circumstance.

He chose to take the train from Baden-Baden to Frankfurt and then hailed a taxi when he arrived. Cost was 7,50 Euro so he gave the driver 10,00. (David definitely recommends taking a taxi vs. public transportation if arriving at the train station.) He arrived exactly at 7:30am and there were already 10 people waiting on the street for the doors to be opened. No one arrived after he did.

A lady in an ‘orange suit’ passed by and opened the door for them. She turned out to be one of the receptionists. There were 2 receptionists on the 1st floor who assigned everyone a number. He was # 4, as there was a family and a couple waiting in the line. They were ushered to the 2nd floor where they were given green forms to complete and instructed to complete ONLY one side of the form. The form consisted of medical history questions in a ‘check this box’ fashion. The first question was, “Have you ever had illnesses or injuries?” and the questions were more specific from there… about disabilities, psychiatric concerns, drug use (including nicotine), etc. He was re-numbered as # 6 as there were multiple people in the family having their medical completed as well.

After completing the form, he took a peek at the reverse side which the doctor was expected to complete. Questions like “Does this person appear healthy?” and “Does this person seem nervous?” So he made a mental note to stay calm (although, he was too tired to be nervous!).

Each person was taken in separately to talk to a clerical person (nurse?) who assembled his file and gave him a receipt for his payment of 125,00 Euro. She asked a few questions about his medical history (his football-related injuries) and gave him a consent form to sign acknowledging that he knew he was going to be tested for HIV. He was given a slip of paper inside his passport to indicate that he was to receive all of the tests required for a visa applicant.

Then it was off to the lab, where 1 woman kept track, very efficiently, of everyone’s tests and processed everyone very quickly. There were some additional people there who had pink forms and she processed them first. They just appeared to have needed blood work done and were sent on their way.

When it was David’s turn, she drew blood, accepted his urine sample, and completed a chest x-ray. He was given the x-ray film to take back upstairs to the secretary who took him to an exam room to wait for the doctor.

He had to put on a dressing gown for the exam… the doctor was very polite, friendly and thorough. Seemed to take additional care to palpate his abdominal area and neck (prob looking for lymph enlargement). He listened to his chest and asked about the details of everything that David had written on his checklist. (So… be prepared with the details of everything you disclose on your paperwork.) He doctor completed an eye exam, looked at the x-ray and was pleased at the condition of his lungs (David gave up smoking when he was in the US this spring).

The doctor concluded by telling him that everything looked fine, but that he should have a tetanus booster and fax the results to them (which David will do tomorrow). Blood and urinalysis results would be forwarded to the Consulate and if there were any concerns, David would be notified by the doctor’s office. The doctor gave him his x-ray to bring to the US.

David remembered to ask for the DS-3025 after the doctor had left, so he tracked him down and asked. The doctor seemed puzzled and sifted through his papers to see if there was any such form…. No one had ever asked that of him, apparently. He suggested that since the vaccinations weren’t completely up to date, that he could obtain a copy of the summary from the Consulate once they had the complete records.

So David left, and was very relieved.

Also of note to Frankfurters:

After David left the medical, he asked a taxi driver to take him to the Consulate so he could ‘scope things out’ before Monday. There is a hotel right across the street from the Consulate and David will be staying there on Sunday night. Here’s the contact info for anyone interested:

I never had to give a urine sample, I don't know if the doctor forgot it and I hope it will not be a problem.

Thanks for the hotel info, i will certainly check out their prices, i will get to frankfurt the day before the interview as well but it will be very late and i would like to stay close to the consulate because i will have no time to check out the way.

Sorry! Meant to add that they quoted David a price of 99,00 Euro for the night including breakfast the next morning ! It is literally right across the street from the Consulate. David's cab driver did not know of it (I guess it's new) so another cab driver came over and told them about it. After giving directions, David's driver knew where to find it.

Check www.hrs.de to see if you can get a cheaper rate than that and rebook. We booked there for 84 a night for two of us, including breakfast. If they have a convention going on though that could be why it costs more.

It is a new hotel, lacks any personality, but is the most convenient.

Thanks Suzy... I checked and 99 is the cheapest through www.hrs.de. Thanks for the idea though!!

He won't be caring about personality.... just a bed and a shower is all he'll need.
