Hey there,

My husband recently got his driver's license from Ohio. Unfortunately you do need a ssn. You will also need your NOA1 for your AOS. You will need to take a written test (it's easy)but some countries (like my husbands) don't need to take the driving. I am not sure if Canada is one of them. Can't you apply for a ssn now?? I think that was all he needed. I hope this helped a little!!Good luck!

Those non-renewable licenses are a pain in the #######. I had a friend (H-1B) who got one in Ohio, and when he moved to Pennsylvania he had to retake his driving test again because the Ohio license wasn't transferable. Who on Earth thought that was a good idea?

my husband had to take both written and driving test here in ohio. they would not accept his international drivers liscence because it didnt have his full birthday on it and made him buy the permit package and do everything from square one.

Plenty of states will not exchange int'l DL's for state DL's. I remember that TN made me go through all the testing as well way back when I arrived in the US with German and int'l DL.

Everyone wanting an OH DL needs to take the written test. They make you take the test even if you just exchange a KY or TN license in OH. Makes them feel special, I guess...

I had an OH license growing up, moved away & just last week went to get a new OHio one. They made me re-test! That's #######. Cali made me test went I moved there but when I move back to Cali, I do not need to re-test. They told me pretty much onyl OH does that.

This is true of most states.

Perhaps you missed the point about the Ohio license, the difference is that once you have it, it cannot be transferred to another state, so if you move to California (for example), you have to take your full driving test again (road and written). No other state license works like this (the most you'll have to do is the written, not the full road test), and they single out only aliens for this treatment!

Not true. A regular OH DL is easily transferred to another state. Even an OH learners permit is transferrable (at least to sunny FL as Nani has done that).

An alien with a foreign issued int'l drivers license, usually takes both the written and road test. OH is not the only state to do that.

Ans if you are referring to the DL's issued to those aliens that are not PR's, other states do the same thing - issue non-transferrable licenses. TN and KY for example. ;)

Yes, I meant aliens that were not PRs, like people with EADs for example. I guess its less of an issue these days as people are getting their Green Cards quick, but I know people who moved from Ohio while going through AOS that got caught by this. Not to mention people who are legally in this country on non-resident visas (like I have been for the last 7+ years).

I didn't realise TN and KY did this also. Idiots.

BTW - if anyone can think of any possible justification for a "non-transferrable" license, I'd be happy to hear it.
