For some strange reason, I was sitting here, reading the forums, doing what I do, when a (thought) struck me.

Gays or Lesbians!!

There are no gays or lesbians on VJ. Now, Im not homophobic by any means of the imagination, I have several friends and family members in the above category. And I'm sure several VJ posters have family members and friends also in the same category.

But I realised, that not only does the Government dictate who can or cant come into this country, it also most certainly dictates, that if you are a Gay or Lesbian, and are in love with your significant other and live in another country, theres no way in hell, your getting here on a Marriage based visa!

I know its a weird thought, and a little off the wall. Im sorry if it offends anyone in here, that is truly not my intention. I just realised, that even though VJ is a diverse group of people, it is not truly diverse, sexual orientation speaking. BI's, maybe there a few, But I'm not one of them.

not offended. but yeah, this site tends to the marriage based visas and thus, by US legal definition, gays/lesbian cannot apply.

But I imagine that if it were a family visa (son/daughter/whatever) then the possibily of said applicant could be gay/lesbian.

Having said that, I don't think you would see them coming on to VJ.

I suppose they could find someone willing to marry them just to get them a visa to come over and be with their gay lover... of course that may be the case with some here and they just don't post about it possibly because they don't want to be exposed?

I've thought of this a lot of times! It's weird!

I heard about an Australian lesbian who married a gay guy to be with her lover, but she had a previous overstay and the guy didn't want to go through the waiver process...

It's really sad. Fortunately, they COULD move to Australia if they'd lived together for a year somewhere--not every country has domestic partnership laws.

Thank you for mentioning that. I was going too, but I felt I had already maybe crossed the line, by bringing up the subject, so didnt mention what you said.

I know a lot of people dont believe in the GAY MARRIAGE thing, but, I personally agree with what Erekose said

I have a few friends who have had or are having a difficult time with immigration issues because one member of the relationship is a non USC. With all the other inequities of the law, these couples are hit with another barrier- the inability to sponsor their partners to stay in the US.

Many countries in the world- even those who do not officially recognize same marriage allow nationals to sponsor their smae sex partners.

It's a shame we don't.

Don't think they were a troll--they had a happy and lovely ceremony and are doing quite well last time I read..

AND for the further interested, the federal law that prohibits immigration benefits based on a (legal) same sex marriage is called DOMA: the Defense of Marriage Act.

I don't think that was a troll at all. And that person was marrying his/her SO who was a different gender, according to USCIS rules for the type of visa they were on. That discussion was mostly about whether or not it would be considered a crime of moral turpitude to knowingly immigrate with the polyamory as a factor in the marriage.

Not exactly the same as homosexual marriage, but along the lines of "outside the norm" for the US.

(And wow, you have a great memory! I'd forgotten all about that one! )
